I was naturally suspicious of all these youtube videos which have DIFFERENT takes into the pre-amps and claiming that it's the pre-amp that's the cause of difference in sound. The 2i2 is closer in feature set to the UMC202HD, which is half the price, yet the latter has one extra function: padding. The 2i2's colour is gorgeous, but that isn't worth the price of a second UMC202HD. As for a closer match in price, the UMC404HD is still cheaper than the 2i2 while it has 4 inputs, 4 outputs, inserts, A/B monitoring and balance, and MIDI in/out. So unless you are a hipster, go Behringer.

I took my Sony 7506 headphones and listened critically to this video. What I can say is that the Scarlet is slightly clearer. The Behringer has more toward bass in the sound, and is a just tad more muddy. When I say a tad more muddy, I really mean just a tiny, almost unoticable, bit. The Behringer also seems to have just a tiny bit more gain. If you're looking for a flat response, the Scarlet probably wins. However, I like a bit of warmth added, so the Behringer is actually more pleasing to my ear. I know that the Behringer's number (from reading reviews for Intermodulation Distortion) are not as good as the Scarlet, but the kind of distortion that it adds, leaning to a bassier sound, is pleasing. If you're trying to cut above a loud number of instruments, with a vocal, perhaps the scarlet would be a good choice. It might be a good choice with a boomy acoustic guitar, too. It's treble response could really do some cutting through a mix. If you've got a problem with boominess in your recordings (voice competing with guitar type of stuff), the Scarlet would thin out the vocals and perhaps reduce the boominess. However, if you have a really nice voice that you want to feature, and find a bit of thickness and warmth to be a plus, the Behringer might be a good choice. If you're a podcaster or broadcaster, I would definitely pick the Behringer for that nice warm vocal sound. Initially I used speakers to do this review, but had to rewrite it after using my pro level Sony headphones. These headphones are used by the pros for a reason. They really reveal things. There is my two cents.

Honestly, I could hear that through my TV speaker. In fact, initially I liked the Behringer better after his vocal test, but when he got to guitar and it switched to the Behringer it was so noticeably bass-driven and like stripped some of the mids or something, that ugly scooped sound. Sounds like you're right on, probably really good for vocals and maybe acoustic guitar if it's too bright, but I'm thinking for modern metal electric guitar, I'm not sure I can afford to let that bassy gutted mid sound be the originator of the analog to digital interpretation.

I'm new to the scene, here are my opinions: 204HD has a lower noise floor with a dynamic range of 110db 2i2 is set at 106db 204HD has midi...I like my midi. 2i2 is such a widespread name and rep. 204HD is built by a brand whom has been around for long long time. 204HD has better lows, yes they may be muddy, but they give that "Broadcaster sound" 2i2 is crispier, but, in my experience, it is harder to bring out the lows. whereas with the 204HD, you can make those highs sparkle much easier and subtract mud in the lows. 204HD has better outputs 2i2 is limited on these outputs, at least in the 1 line input version. 204HD gives you more for 79USD (AMAZON) 2i2 Gives you less for 99.99USD, or 149.99USD for the 2 line input version, which still gives you less. (AMAZON) 2i2 comes with Protools | First, but this is offered for free from AVID, soooo thats lame. (SAME WITH Ableton LIVE LITE.) which is possibly why people buy it soo much, they think its a better deal, and they dont use MIDI. 204HD drivers are irrelevant for MacOS users. 2i2 is a top selling brand, but thats not always better, just more popular. 2i2 99.99USD model has 1/4" outputs, 99.99USD has RCA I can only assume he was using 2i2 and not the solo. At the end of the day, it comes down to whether you want the broadcaster lows and extra inputs, or the crispy sound with less inputs- do you want MIDI? As well as, do you want to spend 150USD or are you on a tight budget, for, if you're buying either of these for under 300USD, you're not getting anything in the "ProLevel". You gotta spend money to get the best of the best. These are sub 200USD and they perform that way.And if youre like me and need the MIDI, but want the 2i2, youre gonna have to spend 199.99USD for the scarlett 2i4, which STILL has a higher noise floor at 108db. PS. i think he switched shirts to make it easier for knowing which one was used. I think I'm going with 204HD.

I wonder how many people in youtube DON'T realise that is way more helpfull if you make an A/B comparisson while playing. When you end the song and leave a gap between that take and the next one, your ears already change the way they percieve sound (for putting it the most easiest way possible for me to explain) so it is not so easy to decide weather you liked more the first take or the second one. I mean, this is a great comparison video, but thats a little detail that can make it twice as helpful as it already is. Same with instrument comparison, mixing and mastering plugins on/off comparison, etc.

I own *that* Behringer. I am very happy with it. It's what I can afford and wanted to pay for. It's have been a choice of nothing if I had to pay for the Focusrite Scarlett along with the other bits and pieces. That said, from this demo, I prefer the sound of the Focusrite Scarlett and I'm going to be honest and say I don't actually know why. But I'm also over 40 so it's subjective to my ears aural infidelity. That said, the Behringer still sounds perfectly acceptable as in 'not at all shabby'. I'm very grateful and happy to have it. When not using a amp simulator, I use a Superlux 258-PRO mic for instrument, the poor man's budget Shure Beta 57. It too does a fine job. I think anyone would be hard pressed not be well pleased with either. The fantastic thing about the Behringer's UMC series is that they are so affordable in every segment.

You can record into that 1 or 2nd input or both then in your DAW record one clean for reamping & the other route to your Amp Sim , I use a ArtMP Tube PreAmp to go into w/Guitar into interface that Tube really brings the Amp Sims to life, the Art is only like $35 -$50 it's amazing but you don;t need that. But it does sound really good for just Guitar I've ran thru that ART Pre into my Mac's Sound card into Amplitube & WOW!!! Sound's great like that on over driven sounds you don't hear any lose of tone imo. But that 202HD is the way to go. You can use that ART tube pre as a DI too. I've done that for Bass before in a studio recording. You can change the tube if you want to upgrade it i'd suggest a JJ tesla 12xa7

It seems the behringer u-phoria umc204hd allows single channel mix to stereo for single channel in and dual channel out, which the Scarlett does not, is that true? I want to use one of these for live streaming through Google Hangouts and I want to ensure my single channel mic input is output to both left/right channels for viewers and listeners without using some software "in the middle".

The Xenyx q502 is a little live mixer with recording ability. It will have bad recording quality. Try the Focusrite Scarlett or the Audient ID4. Those should give you decent quality to begin with.

The strat is a parts guitar I built with Fralin pickups running straight into a Super Reverb head I built. Then a WGS G12C speaker mic'd with an Sm57.

Music and mixing skills matter more than gear. That said, at this price point, the differences are minimal. Starting at the Audient and SSL+ price point, on up to the Universal Audio, RME and Apogee price points, you get better sounding preamps and AD converters. That is for certain.

Hello there, Can I plug a mic and Digital piano together on this Interface using the direct monitoring switch, the idea it to use it has a mixer as well, because all I need is 2 inputs...will this USB powered device operate 2 connections without any issues secondly can I use a mobile charger to just power this device, just in case I do not want to record every time.
@KleyDeJong

Nicholas that's why I'm watching this video, because I'm stuck with a broken Scarlet interface as well and I think I'm gonna go with the Behringer this time. You can try emailing Focusrite, they do respond and offer suggestions on how to fix it but for me it didn't do anything so I'm just going to throw it away
@AnubisAkaLee

Random pops are usually grounding issues. Have you confirmed the issue is not the microphone or the cable going to the microphone? Plug in a different mic using a different cable if possible. I have had condenser microphone circuits go bad and it would literally sound like someone was taking there finger and taping the microphone grill every minute or so (the worst pops I have experienced).

You are assuming this effect is caused by the pre-amp rather than any of a billion other factors like strumming technique or mic distance.

After reading a negative user review at Thomann (claiming that vocal recordings sound much more unrealistic than with a simple low-budget 16bit/48khz Behringer Xenyx USB mixer) and now listening closely to this video of the UMC204HD via speakers and via headphones, I would definitely say that it does NOT sound neutral at all. I agree - more or less - to the opinion of VirtualLife. Still good value for its price, though. But the Focusrite clearly beats it here. For those who need MIDI: The bigger brother Scarlett 2i4 2nd Gen has it.

Check your AI doesn't stay close to any other devices, esp. speakers - electro-magnetic interference is a problem. Other option is isolate box w screen and use same protected audio wires. Hope it helps!

Each color has a different wavelength of visible light. I'm too busy to look this up on wikipedia but surely It stands to reason that sound waves must work the exact same way. I'm pretty sure he compromised this test as the sound waves bounced off the different colors of his shirt. Can't trust this review.
