I like my battery box mounted on the back of the board best, how ever the leash gets snagged sometimes so I have it mounted forward opposite my front foot.

Nice video and explanation! I was just talking about the position of the box with my friend a few days ago, before your video appeared on KZitem. 🙂 The next step in the development of the foil drive could be to put the box in a backpack and connect it to the drive by wrapping the power cord in a leash. I hope there are already power cords that can withstand such strenuous use?

Please don’t do this. FoilDrive have released an official response to anyone thinking of using it like a back pack which outlines the many potential problems and safety issues. The cable is not designed to withstand the force of a human pulling against it. Even the most strong leash systems snap/break occasionally, and when that happens you will ruin your system. I shouldn’t have to warn anyone about the potential danger of strapping a lithium ion battery to your body. The system is safe for use when used as it’s been designed for, but it’s simply not designed to be attached to your body

thanks for the great info, do you have any info on placement of cable guides for the front and side front foot mount? Is there a way to adjust cable length. Alooooooha!

Thanks for sharing. I’ve seen a person mounting the battery on the waist leash belt not on a board at all. What would be your thoughts on that approach?
@dominichoskyns9091
Жыл бұрын
Don’t do it. Eventually you’ll wreck the cable and or the box and flood your battery. FoilDrive explicitly advised against using it like that. Using it like that voids the warranty. The cable is designed to withstand the weight of the battery, not the weight of a person. All safety systems that have been built by those who have done this have failed at some point. It’s an accident waiting to happen

Hi Dominic! How do you guide the cable when putting the box forward or side under the chest? Thanks mate!

I use the board cable guides (as supplied by foil drive) along the rail to the back of the board and then go underneath at the back to the mast

Thanks for taking time to make this video and all the others. When you say swing weight, i assume its just for turning etc. I envision that having a battery too far forward or aft (of the center of lift) and bouyancy.. would be bad because it requires you to adjust position once flying.. However i am not really experienced.. What are your thoughts on this subject.. ideally i would assume the battery should sit as closely as possible to center of lift and buoyancy? Then there is the force generated by the propellor which changes if i no longer have thrust lifting the nose up.. Any advice appreciated.. I have battery mounted on rear of a 95 naish carbon hover.. i have to kind of hop back a little as i try to pop the board out of the water and fly to balance it, and then scooch back a little more as i fly to feel balanced.. I haven't really gotten to the pumping and gliding with motor turned off yet (4 sessions on foil drive, many winging without assist though()

Swing weight effects turning and pumping. Weight (even from the length of a long board) that is any any distance from the pivot point (the foil and mast) will cause swing weight. The weight of FoilDrive is only a real problem with a small board. With a big board you’ll not notice much swing weight with the hood behind your back foot, apart from when you start or stop using the motor, and as you have already identified that is when you have to shift your weight to compensate for the change in lift. The ideal position for the box is just above the foil, but it then gets in the way.

For downwinding with Foil Drive do you recommend a specific mast length? I have a 36" (90 cms) mast with the Foil Drive at 18 cms below the board and do not know if a shorter mast will be better.
@dominichoskyns9091

They all work fine - they best length mast is the length you are used to. I ride 82cm for everything except winging, which I use a 90cm mast for due to the choppy conditions and because I’m moving at higher speed. However, once I broke my 82cm mast and I had to use a 75cm and 90cm masts for everything, and although I hated them at first, after a while it’s fine, you just got to get used to it. Everyone has a preference, but most of the time a preference is based on familiarity. You won’t really know what length mast is best for you until you’ve tried them all for a decent amount of time

I have the Naish Hover 135 ltr inflatable that I plan to learn foiling on with the Foil Drive . I have a photo of the exact same set up as mine and the battery box strapped on the back of the board with a tie down. Any other suggestions? Does anyone have experience using the FD on the Naish inflatables? I am so frothing to learn this! Well done video, thank you...👍

For any board with that amount of volume the box is 100% fine strapped to the board behind your back foot👍
