This is one of my favourite duets of theirs...this song, as with the others, was for Fred & Ginger. When you hear every one of them, it correlates with their lives and their relationship. And every dance, funny, swinging, or romantic- you see the magnetic chemistry between them. They dated, you all know..? It's an unrequited yearning that they shared. But when they two dance, it is art and their love shines then. To the king and queen of the dance!

La la land was successful because it was an attempt to capture the magic of these scenes and these stars, but with the modern actors that haven't had as extensive training (and aren't nearly as talented).Because of this, even the poor copy that la la land was, was met with great acclaim, because we're all starved of new content in the same vein as the old musicals. When will Hollywood realise this is what we're all crying out for!

@@mrsarthurfleck Eleanor Powell's relationship as a solo dancer was with the audience. Unlike Fred, she looked through the camera at the spectators, teasing, challenging, amazing and entrancing them. Ginger's acting skills were directed towards her partner while we voyeurs were charmed and dazzled by their playfully romantic chemistry. But Eleanor seduced us directly; her feats would trigger standing ovations and gasps of astonishment such as exhibitors had never witnessed. We today, 80-90 years later, are blessed that we can compare and contrast them. It remains true that Astaire, despite his many 'sock solos' as he called them, is valued above all for his tutelage of many lady colleagues. Ellie did duets, but her best appreciated work was performed alone or with a chorus of men under her heel.

I think of that sometimes when I hear a singer mangle the National Anthem with egotistical flourishes. I enjoy immensely watching everything Fred and Ginger did in blue and white. For that reason, my like for his dances in color are limited, with reference to his collaboration with Barrie Chase. The exceptions I have to accepting Astaire in color are "I left my hat in Haiti," with Jane Powell. A ballet with Cyd Charisse, "Dancin' in the dark." "This heart of mine," and "Limehouse blues," with Lucille Bremer. "It only happens when I dance with you," with Ann Miller. These are the rare exceptions I make to watching Astaire in color. I suspect, but cannot prove, that Astaire was a big influence in some of the dance sequences of Michael Jackson.

I thought I'd seen all of their numbers, but I'd never seen this one, and it's a SCREAM! Astaire starts off with a bitchin' ragtime piano performance of this tune (and I've researched it, and it really is him playing), a performance the like of which Willie "the Lion" Smith himself could be proud... Then Fred sings to Ginger and it's sweet... ...and then Ginger sings to Fred, and it's tender... ...and then they go into a riotous dance routine that can only be described as "Tap-Dance Slapstick." (The ending actually had me laughing out loud.) I came to this footage because I continue to grow in my appreciation of that LEGAL immigrant who came to these shores and enriched our culture as he added his own unique spice to our Cultural Melting-Pot, Irving Berlin: Think about it... This self-taught musician, for whom English was a second language, wrote not only crowd-pleasers like "White Christmas," "Easter Parade," and the genuinely patriotic "God Bless America," but also incredibly hip and harmonically-sophisticated show tunes that would become "society" staples and Jazz standards such as, "Let Yourself Go," "Let's Face the Music, and Dance," "Cheek to Cheek," and this one. (And, he was a music-business genius: He was the first major songwriter to retain publishing rights/royalties to his own stuff, which meant that when he passed away in 1989, at the age of 101, he was FABULOUSLY WEALTHY.)

Where can I find the research of his really playing the piano in this scene. I know that he was a great imitator, and had a great sense of timing. If you watch his right hand, and listen, to what is being played, and also his left hand with notes that he couldn't be playing, I am unconvinced. Another movie shows him playing an accordion in a band. His right hand is just awkwardly sliding around, with no chords being played. A piano player would have formed chords naturally, when holding the instrument. In the movie where he sings The Way You Look Tonight at the piano, Not only does the camera not show his hands, but they don't coincide with what is being played, which is what you always see in the movies, with non-piano players.

dontheshark, The extra notes are coming from a second piano back-to-back with Fred's; you can see the guy playing it stand up at 1:05. Fred did play the piano, drums, and accordion IRL. He once did a stage number where he danced while playing the accordion. But he probably wasn't really playing in _Flying Down to Rio_ (the one where he played accordion in the band). See also _Roberta_ "I Won't Dance" for more of his piano playing, and _Damsel in Distress_ and _Daddy Long-Legs_ for drums.

The shots that begin at 1:24 made Ginger complain that Mark Sandrich, the director, would rather shoot the back of her head. But she was so expressive that he must have thought it would not matter😀.

in hollywood's golden age actors had to be talented. today or for decades, only thing what means is making money or how many awards the movie wins. today, you could get leading role just based on that what citizens thinks. what director or writers or production wants really doesn't matter at all. even acting skills doesn't matter anymore.
