So true to the "If you are not using the cards another way, then buying the product is the hobby, and you keep just buying product".

Thanks for the thoughtful video. Following the same train of thought, buying a product you enjoy leaves you with a product you enjoy even if it goes to zero. The challenge is figuring out whether you like a particular product for its design or for its secondary market value, and the further you are from the community the harder that is to distinguish.

A great contrast to Rudy's videos over the last 3 years. I'm afraid we're going to see a million people with a room full of nostalgic crap going "oh wait why did I buy this" sooner than later.

You put into words what I experienced in Digimon. Even as a longtime tcg player, I bought boxes for the first time in my entire life because despite a lifetime of bad luck with packs, there was a set that had a cycle of guaranteed promos that were going to be necessary for constructed play moving forward. I convinced myself I would sell my unwanted rares and keep the cost to myself low. What happened? I pulled pretty badly, my schedule didn't end up letting me play in my locals for a long time, and my closest friends don't have these cards so games can be very uneven. Giving in to FOMO made me lost my love of engaging with the game. I'm now looking to price and sell my collection. Lesson learned.

I am also saying this same thing to my play group when they complain about this hobby being expensive. If you play commander and are not set collecting dont crack packs! Buy the singles you need! It is always the less expensive way to play this game. Buying single also keeps you personal bulk under control. The other thing that drives me crazy is when people crack packs or boxes and becasue of the cards they pull they claim wow that box paid for its self. Then I ask them are you going to sell the cards and they say no. Then the cards inside did not pay for the box and the value means nothing!

That is why collector boosters are total scams. I buy product only to draft. Anything I get from drafts is what I use to build commander decks when no limited is being played. Most packs I win in draft I keep to do chaos drafts.

I only get FOMO when I know a card is going to squeeze and it may be years before it has a mass reprint. Best recent example were commander masters eldrazi's that hit their cycle lows on the news that MH3 will have the giant monsters. I did jump the reprint gun on outlaws of thunder junction land reprints before they hit the bottom so that impatience cost me 50% on certain cards. It's kind of difficult to catch a falling knife but when you hit it just right there is nothing better. MH3 singles are incredible - retro foil priest of titania hit $1.

Is it all FOMO or is procrastination a big part? If you don’t want something too badly and think you’ll have time to get it later (or not want it at the current price) you can easily project that feeling onto others and expect to get it later cheaper. As demand prices go up, at a critical point, people have to accept that the product will not be as readily available or dropping in price as they expected. FOMO is part of it, but it’s also forced acceptance of bad forecasting

I have a set budget for all my nerd hobbies. My fiance and I agreed to $200.00 a month. If I wanted to hang at the bar instead of the game store or got into golf, classic cars etc ... my dude time would cost way more. Does Games Workshop have a new LIMITED EDITION box out? Is a different MTG set the new hottness? Who cares. I can still get a game in and see my friends or paint for a couple hours after a hard day and thats why I'm in these hobbies.

I started playing/collecting MTG in October ’23. Seeing everyone else’s Fomo has turned me off having it myself. It doesn’t mean I’m immune, but I do pretty well not falling prey to the tactics. When the MH3 collector commander sets were spoiled I was tempted. After seeing them after release I’m glad I didn’t buy into the bs.

FOMO is only part of the problem. The real problem is the addictive and gambling esque nature that comes with opening packs. You said it yourself- People would come in and joke about the high price, open a pack lose their minds at the potential and spend spend spend. It's just alike a casino when you get a tiny win the first time. It's the dopamine rush that keeps them cracking packs.

Will the price of mh3 singles go up or down now that the set is officially release? Portrait Six has gone up to around 7e and its pretty steep for my playgroup with about 2e per single ceiling for a select playset

Louie, do you think your demand is higher now for MH3 because your 25% profit margin you wanted for yourself caused your boxes to be higher than the eBay bulk sellers but now your price is essentially “at market” (save a few eBay sellers)
