My Irish is a little rusty but here's what I think the English translation is for those wondering. It seems like the words are about the time Ireland fought for freedom from the UK: The calm silence falls down, All around me once again. The words in my head were so sweet. They're now silent but I still remember. And the dream, That would always prevail, It's distant now. Where is the desire for freedom? Enemies came from overseas, To seek the darkness in the light. Not a nation for you are not real. “Go to hell or go to Connacht.” They seek to destroy, Our spirit and to suppress, Our identity. Extinguishing the desire for freedom. But there were voices that still remained, That stood bravely for their rights. For they'd never bow for any king. For they'd never live under him. Rising up, And out of the danger. Giving their lives, For the desire of freedom. But we will be silent no more. Our voices must be heard. Tired of this old heartache, Aching to end the embarrassment. Forever speaking out the words, That we are free, Forever true. And we sing a song, Of Freedom.

I love the line “‘g iarra’ dubh a chuir ‘na gheal.” Even though “geal,” or light, is a different word from “Gael,” which refers to the Gaelic people of Ireland, Scotland, and Isle of Man, I like to think there was a subtle hidden meaning. “Wanting to turn the darkness into light,” vs the pseudo-pun “Wanting to turn the wicked into The Gael.” Remember though that “dubh” here doesn’t mean the literal color black. Like in English, I understand that “dubh” can take abstract meanings, like “darkness”, “wickedness”, “the unknown”, or other concepts like that. I’m not an expert of Irish. Nílim ach dalta na Gaeilge, ach bhí mé ag gáire a smaoineamh ar rud haha.

Someone translated these lyrics somewhere in the comment section. It amounts to the history of the English attempting to erase the language. "to hell or to Connaught" refers to Cromwell forcing the Irish west or to be killed. Throughout the song they remind us that even though a few brave souls rescued the language, it is still alive. Try Duolingo it's free and is very good for starting to learn Irish/Gaeilge.

Children's books, they're easy and have the most common phrases we use. Plenty on YT of young children learning Irish. Do not attempt till you learn the lrish alphabet. If you love Irish use a memory palace for the alphabet and you'll be able to speak the language before you know any words. Better you know how they sound before the meaning. I learnt the Spanish alphabet and it's rules, can't understand a word of it but by all accounts I'm a very good reader. Much love and appreciation from Ireland ☘️🌈💚 There's plenty of YT content on national and regional accents. If actors can do it anyone can do it. 😎

The Irish language Gaeilge pronounced GWALE-GEH is an ancient language. It is a much older language than English so they have nothing in common. Because they have nothing in common, there is no direct translation from Irish into English or visa versa. Lyrics are translated to be as close as possible or to reflect the context of the lyric as close as possible.
