I'm a RN who worked in behavioral health for the past several years. I primarily worked with patients who were homeless and I was always concerned about their diets. It was so difficult to administer medications for depression and anxiety when my gut told me what they needed more were proper nutrients, especially the B vitamins. This is such a problem for the homeless today when they can't afford to eat right. They end up hanging out at fast food restaurants where they are more likely to get help to buy food. Thank you for this excellent video!

Thank you! this is so true...I have begun taking superfoods Chlorella and Spirulina and within minutes I feel very energetic and very positive..Being over 60 is difficult. Dont make it worse by "Living for food"..Lets begin a new idea of "eating to live better".

I like this presentation in that it made connections. She links things you know together in such a way that it is easier to understand how the system works. It is one thing to know that you need B vitamins, lean meat, and Omega 3. It is another thing to understand how they work together within us.

A larger than moderate use of sugar tears away our stored B vitamins and can steer us into a crash! Depression is to me like a constant mood crash... quarrelsomeness, fear, more 08:38 likely!

I know it’s almost 8 years later, but why did the speaker mix up metric measurements with American oz’s. It’s unnecessarily confusing. Why not post a comment right in the description doing the metric and separately the American measurements? Can anyone from UCSD please do that since Ms Newman is no longer with us?

Why on earth should we be hesitant to eat eggs with bacon and butter??? Two foods that even according to this lecture should be (and are) perfectly safe in conjunction with low carb eating.
@lifetobelived9102

There shouldn't be a problem as long as the eggs and bacon are high quality where the chickens and pigs are raised in healthy conditions and fed good foods.

It works great. I forage for insects a couple of hours each day. In urban areas, it is much easier, because cockroaches are so much easier to gather.

Good presentation... But no need to be concerned about tryptophan. It was about 30 years ago when the very first product resulting from genetic modification was put on the market and that was the GM version of tryptophan. The scientists missed the fact that the GM process caused a tiny amount of very toxic substance to be also be produced which was included in the final product. Some people died and thousands were sickened. So GM tryptophan was taken off the market. There was nothing wrong with the tryptophan supplement before the GM version, and nothing wrong with it now. Just avoid GMOs!!!!!

What the hell are we supposed to eat!!! I’m sick to death of these so called experts giving us completely different information about food. The stress caused by the worry of eating wrong foods is the main killer. A little of what ya fancy does ya good.🇮🇪🇮🇪

Pay attention to your body's reactions and eat what works for you. It is complicated though because your body may react differently at different time with the same food.

(guest) Miriam, yes it is complicated. I have been taking notes for years ! But it's not fair to say we are being given COMPLETELY different information. I detect many common factors that keep coming up. It still amazes me that everything I have read about or seen backs up what my mentor Doris Grant wrote many decades ago, and Doris learnt from Dr. Howard Hay, ex USA : he came over to see her, and that was the basis of her life- long interest in nutrition : she lived to about 100, I think...and was writing up to 3 weeks before " departing" : that backs up what the oldest folk tell us about their lives...... 70% fruit & vegetables, 15% protein, & 15% carbs. ( The " Mediterranean diet" backs this up....) Organic and raw (veg , not meat!) wherever possible. Spring water ( avoid chlorine etc in tap water). Everything in moderation. ( Not ' puritanical' : a, beer, cider, etc in moderation is o.k ! See Doris's Table of Compatible Foods). Latterly, the most inspiring lectures I have found come from Dr. John Bergman, who gets very angry about the damage that comes from junk food, and med's sold to attempt to COPE with that damage! Please see his great videos on juicing/ blending : he goes into great detail about why the ingredients chosen add up to an excellent basic starting point for health, and combat years of damage we have been sleep-walking into, by taking refined, adulterated foods over many years . Look at videos here about the diets of the oldest folk from all over the world : clean air, organic fresh food, contentment, exercise, decent sleep, social interaction / support . If we can work towards getting all those things, then the body will last a lot longer. I'd like humbly to add one more thing: classical music : the uplifting, stimulating , life- enhancing effects of the huge wealth of sublime music there is for us to enjoy : the body functions better when endorphins from pleasure are released. We know people feel happy when they sing and dance...And joining in with others has the added benefit of social interaction :team effort, shared aims, etc. : More endorphins! And naturally made, not from artificial chemicals . The lady dietician here backs up all I've heard from Doris Grant and Dr. Bergman : worth persevering with ! ☺ We do know now a lot more about the subtle things we need to ensure we get. Many of us live in polluted areas, with stress from overcrowding, so we need to try and counteract the bad effects, and surely a good strategy is to learn what we need to do....... Best wishes from England. ☺☺☺☺☺

Brian Russel Thank you very much Brian for taking the time to write such a detailed informative answer to my questions. I know I sounded a bit freaked out but I’m Irish we tend to be a bit dramatic. Any how I love the advice about the 70%, 15%,15%. That makes sense . I recently started juicing 2 meals and eating one and I feel great.. it just annoys me when food producers can legally poison people with what they produce all in the name of business. As for music , my father instilled a love of classical music in me years ago, I hated it when in my teens but love it today. So I agree wholeheartedly with ya there. So Brian good luck and God bless from Ireland 🇮🇪 🇮🇪😊

Brian Russel, Dr John Bergman, chiropractor, is my first go to guy for health. Goofy but amazing. He KNOWS about joints and bone health and FAR BEYOND. He's totally anti-prescription and modern medicine other than repair of trauma.accident damage. I agree with ratio, but choose not to eat animals. GREENS-yes! Green is the color of LIFE. Chlorophyll is almost identical in content to blood and sea water. Hydrate well and use 1/8 tsp of ancient sea salts ( NOT sodium) per 32 oz and must have source of iodine.
