My mother recently started dialysis.. 3 days a week. No dietitians nor any advice was given to us. She gets leg cramps and i gave her lime juice with plenty of salt. Due to her low weight, before it was recommended i give her lots of butter on toast. After dialysis i was still giving her that in the morning. She is very tired, constantly has back pain, burping, low blood pressure (99/47), loss of appetite, but sugar level often very high, insulin not seem to be effective as before, so increased it and given several times. I think nowadays, we have to do our own research.. they dont even give leaflets. Its so hard to see the doctors, when you are admitted to the hospital. Nurses and different doctors just gave us contradicting infos..one doctor said dialysis didnt happen a day before..another said it did happen, they need to do permanent line. She had temporary line on her thighs, seems like this doctor was not aware of.. We were so confused. The process just happens, but no one explains to you.. you have to do the research yourselves.

Ok I been on dialysis since 1992 and over all I have done great for the most part. I owe favor from God,proper diet, exercise at least 4days a week. Do I ever get in a slump? Yes. Do I ever have high phosphorus ....etc...? Yes but not often. Maybe 2 or 3times a year,if that. I have a 85-90%plant base diet with the exception of Salman, Whiting Fish, Boneless/Skinless Chicken Breast (all are either baked or grilled in Olive Oil), Ground Turkey/Chicken,and egg whites. Now I want to step my game up and get on that Herbalife. My wife has been using it for 4months and she looks amazing. Can a dialysis patient w/my status take Herbalife? Someone please answer. Oh yes one more thing my vegetables consist of Veggie Rice in place of rice to avoid the starch and carbs. I also eat mashed cauliflower in place of mash potatoes. I eat Veggie Breakfast patties, veggie tenders, veggie nuggets,veggie tots. Because I don't eat a lot of leafy vegetables. Success is in all our hands but you have to be willing to make a change in Your diet.

I work in a medical office for six surgeons and I am astounded at how many of our patients don't even know they have impaired kidney function until we send them in for pre-op labs and the results come back. Or they are going to have an MRI or CT with contrast and we have to do a pre-procedure EGFR. The patients usually say they feel fine, etc., but we refer them back to their PCP or Nephrologist.
@VK-qo1gm

+szqsk8, I don't know why you would be "astounded', kidney disease is called silent for a reason, many ppl don't feel any symptoms until they are in a stage of CKD, many GPS have no idea that their patients have it either until it becomes critical. Your comment is just plain stupid

I agree! My husband has been told next step is dialysis. Trying to figure out what best to feed him. It seems SO counterintuitive to remove beans, whole grains, and other plant foods and tell him he should eat meat! Good grief! Husband is not diabetic. We are working to eliminate dairy and eggs from our diet. But otherwise we almost never eat meat. Give me the numbers/percents of how much sodium, potassium, and phosphorus he should stay below each day, and I'll figure out what HEALTHY foods he can eat. White rice??? White crackers??? Canned fruits over fresh? It just doesn't make any sense to me!!!

+Nameless, no, because ppl on dialysis have a lot of protein taken out so have to up the intake, unlike ppl who are in stage 4 or 5 of CKD, who have to monitor the intake of protein & eat less. Either way portion control is very important in any stage & when on dialysis

This lady is teaching what she has been taught. So no fault to her. But, I'm wondering what a non-processed, whole foods, all plant (not just plant-based) diet would look like. Could a person have whole grains (brown rice, whole wheat, barley, oats...) if all processed foods were removed. And what about proteins. I understand that the dialysis machine will leech protein from the body, but wouldn't it be better to replace it with proteins naturally occurring in foods - beans/legumes, nuts, etc. I'm not talking about meat-replacement products (Morning Star, Gardeine, Boca, etc) which are so processed who KNOWS what they are actually made of! Why should canned fruit be better for anyone than fresh, whole fruit? If we eat a "Genesis" diet, shouldn't we be better off than trying to use a magnifying glass to read potassium, sodium, and phosphorus numbers on labels? A zucchini doesn't come with a label. Neither does an apple or a stem of chard. If we eat what God originally gave us to eat, wouldn't we be better off? After all, the manufacturer of my car tells me I shouldn't be putting corn syrup in the gas tank. Wouldn't my Maker know best how to fuel my body and keep it running smoothly? Sadly -- didn't follow His plan until it became critical. Now looking at it and thinking should have eaten HIS way all along... My husband is not diabetic. But his kidney function is very low. He has been told to think about dialysis options. I'm the one rebelling... If I eat the same meals he's potentially going to have to eat, I WILL become diabetic! I will become more obese than I am. I WILL soon be on dialysis myself! Heaven help us all...

my mom is dialysis patient and she avoid to drink liquid things more ..... but in summer water is needed so what can we do ?
@swolfe9668
2 жыл бұрын
your mom can still drink liquids, your mom needs to know what her dry weight is when she goes into dialysis and an understanding of fluid overload ex: my dry weight is 52.5 kilo I usually come in to dialysis at 53.4 so they take of enough fluid to get me back to my dry weight, remember the more fluid your mom puts on the harder it is on her body to take off during her run, have her chew gum and ice chips

Hi, I think CKD dieticians should realize the the foods list should be compatible with a diabetic diet. As a lot of dialysis patients are diabetics. A diabetic should be very conscious of how many Carb are in their diet. The fruits and cereals in this list are ridiculous, they are very high in sugar and carbs. Black berries and raspberries are a better choice as they have more fibre. Long story short it is about time diabetic and dialysis dieticians should be working together to help provide better food choices. One diet does not fit all.
@evelynramos6102

Wicked Wanda the purpose of a nutrition treatment in kidney care or CKD is avoid malnutrition. The glucose levels are not a priority in a dietetic treatment because they can be normal with drugs or physical activity and improved with stress management (the same interventions in a person with diabetes). In the other hand, the only way to preserve the functionality of the kidneys, it’s with a diet (high in carbohydrates, high in healthy fats and low in protein from animal sources), so even if the diet is high in carbs, your doctors should adequate the dosage of drugs to their carbohydrate intake, to avoid high glucose in plasma + exercise/physical activity. All this in order to avoid malnutrition and their complications
