These are two different places. First part is the Everest Base Camp and the second one is Langtang valley.

Christopher James ... They were in Langtang - it's a long way from Everest and not on the trekking route towards Everest. I think they were trekkers not mountaineers.

The avalanche coverage in this video is really awesome. I loved the part where I could see the avalanche. I also liked how there was proper end commentary to tie loose ends. Terrifying avalanche video, Smithsonian.

I was at that very hamlet at the top of the Langtang Valley, Kyanjin Gompa, back in February of 1989. At the time the valley was little visited and there were only a couple of small buildings there. I think it was a sacred site where the local tribesmen made yak cheese. Now it's become overrun with tourists and trekkers. Glad I was able to experience such an amazingly stunning place before it was "discovered" by the mass of Westerners. Further down the valley a huge landslide covered a village and killed a couple of hundred people. It was the deadliest event resulting from this massive earthquake that shook the entire country of Nepal and beyond. Terrible tragedy. RIP . . .
