It is impossible to fully stop concussions because what is happening in the skull cannot be rectified. The brain is smaller than the cavity of the skull and is floating in cerebral spinal fluid and no amount of cushioning available for the skull will prevent brain injuries; the brain is still in motion and the only thing stopping it from continued motion is the skull. Until the brain is kept form wobbling round in the skull when hit, there is no stopping a concussion from occurring...

Don't blow off the FREE public education. Getting a useful education base should be the first goal if an athlete or not. The Universities and the NFL create a lot of wealth from the Football and don't care if you ever graduate. They care about you until you stop playing and making the money, then they say, next. Playing professional anything is like winning the lottery. If a great player and dedicated you might make the NFL. However, only 32 NFL teams x 52 players equals 1664 total players in the NFL. Good Luck, nothing replaces education is the TRUTH. I recommend starting your own business is the key to the USA. Work for yourself not corps. The corps care about the metrics and their own personal bank accounts and the bonus.

The news has a habit of making thing's sound WAY worse than they are. I've played football since I was 4 year's old and I'm 20 now playing in a small NAIA school and I've never suffered a concusion because my coaches taught us to always lead with your shoulder and grab cloth when making a tackle. Yes there are time's where helmet to helmet collisions are unavoidable but if you learn the correct technique then a concusion can be completely avoided

People on here have no clue what they are talking about. The MAIN drawback from concussions is the LONG TERM damage from concussions and even sub concussive hits. A sub concussive hit is a hit that is harmless, unless you take hundreds of them like all football players do. A kid who is 16 is not thinking about the long term effects of football. CTE, dementia, early memory loss.

Years ago, football player/coach legend, Mike Ditka said if you want to reduce football injuries, then instead of adding more and more helmet, padding, and protection, just reduce it! Less or no helmet and pads means not playing, tackling, and moving recklessly. Imagine players using very light almost "bump" head protection and no other padding. Players would be using their heads to think and strategize, not collide. Players would change the way they play and the game would be safer and just as exciting...if not more.

I wish they would do a study on the Number of Athletes that get hurt wrestling.. Broken Back, Torn Hips, Broken legs ect. My point being anytime you get out of the bed and both feet hit the ground there is going to be that chance you may get hurt. With the push of concussion awareness it most certainly has brought it to the forefront. I honestly feel as if kids were taught at a younger age how to tackle properly this would reduce concussions drastically. A vast majority of your High School coaches have had some type of concussion training as well as playing experience to back up their coaching. The issue lies at the younger age, you have Dads that have no business out there coaching their little Johnny how to make a tackle.Little Johnny bad habits are reinforced as a "Good Job", Thus extremely difficult to fix later on down the road. Little Johnny gets older Dad moves up to coach his son. Kid get to Middle School (if it is like it is around here the Middle School Coaches don't have a clue either) and those bad habits are not fixed. Everybody check out some of the middle school football hits on here and tell me if I'm wrong.... USA football has done as great job with their Heads up Tackling and Blocking series to teach correct Hat/Hands/Feet placement in a correct form tackle. I have played Football for 15 years and now have coached for 10..The number of concussion we have had in those 10 years are less then 5.. Baseline Testing/ Concussion Protocols ect. has made the game a lot safer... Lets all face it. Anytime we get into a car we know that there could be a negative outcome. No matter how "safe" we think we are we still know about the possibility of that outcome. Same goes with ALL sports. Get you kids out of the house.. Let them play in the yard and not on the Video console. Let them learn what its like to be apart of team. Let them set goals and have to actually work for them... Just my .02

I played football from the age of 4 until I was 23. I played at the University of New Mexico. In that 19 years of playing, I've had one concussion. It didn't come from a helmet to helmet hit. It came when I was making a tackle and another teammate came in and landed on top of my head, causing it to slam into the ground. I was always taught to tackle with my face mask on the ball. Making sure you or your athletes are properly hydrated, have a mouth piece that isn't cut or chewed and covers their molars, and having a properly fitted helmet are the ways to lessen the chances of having a concussion in the game of football. There is no way to fully prevent, but the steps that have been taken to make the game safer for head to head contacts are great and effective. Hopefully parents won't buy in to the hysteria that football is unsafe.

The playing style of the game changed because of the helmet. Once the helmet is on, the player becomes a projectile. There is no helmet design which will reduce concussions. Changing the game, or not playing it, is the only way to reduce the chances of players getting CTE. The game is loved by millions because of the fierce hits and the sounds those hits produce. The NFL makes billions every year because of the ferocity of those hits. It is war and the players are modern day gladiators. The game will not change, unless the fans want it.

There's no helmet in the world that's going to be able to stop a players brain from crashing into his skull. It simply defies the laws of physics. The only way to dramatically reduce the number of concussions in football is to get rid of the helmet. At the very least making the facemasks much smaller (like the old one bar facemasks) would stop players from leading with the head.

@ Wyatt Walden Yes, everything carries some risk. But that doesn't mean that everything is equally risky. Juggling tennis balls carries some level of risk, but not nearly the same level as juggling running chain saws. The trick is to mitigate as much as possible the unnecessary risks--especially when we're discussing concussions. I've had two, and while the second one wasn't bad, the first one was. It was probably a week before I could concentrate enough to follow the flow of an entire TV program. Trying to avoid kids from having to go through that isn't bubble-wrapping them.

@ashs4022

@ben-t no, the premise of this TV clip about concussion is that testing now show the "shear" and "rebounding" injuries that cause the brain to bounce back and forth WITHIN the skull cap. So, in essence, many people get concussions, NOT just by direct hits to the head... its that fact that you accelerate and decelerate your body, but your brain is surrounded by fluid... so take a ball within a ball, but surrounded by water, shake it hard enough, and the ball will strike the inside of the other ball. You can and DO in fact see this type of concussion all the time in similar violent/impact sports: boxing, wrestling and non impact sports or Auto accidents...where its the fact that the person is moving at a set speed and suddenly stops, but the brain continues to move forward for a minimal time, at the same rate of speed, and then strikes the inside of the head. There is NO helmet that will protect this...there is NO WAY to prevent this , without proper Technic... you have to hit correctly, and even then, you still risk an "acceleration deceleration" injury, by other around you NOT hitting correctly. This sport is going to get slowed down, quite soon.

@xXMrPsychoJXx

People do realize that it states on the helmets and on the websites of helmet providers that the helmet won't 100% guarantee prevention to head injuries. The NFL and NCAA (not too sure about NFHS) don't have set regulations for the amount of padding in a player's helmet, and the helmet a player wears is completely their choice. Improper use of helmets, such as not being strapped on securely or positioned correctly, can increase chances of injury. Many players go into games knowing there is a risk of injury, but there's also players with bad morals and bad sportsmanship that look to harm others to gain an advantage. The point I'm trying to make is that head injuries aren't too common when you look at as many players across all three leagues in the US, but it's still enough of a concern that companies like Riddell and Schutt need to further improve equipment, but staff (coaches, referees, etc.) need to be able to keep a better eye out so severe injuries can be reduced.

Head injuries happen because of years of improper tackling techniques. We should be teaching tackling with the head to the side by using the shoulders mandatory wrapping the arms and stay low .

You have to realize that a football player is voluntarily taking those hits. The player signed up for that so the risk is on them. As a D-lineman all your doing is hitting your head but i take initiative to make sure that i play safe. I would use this product fully knowing it won't prevent me from injury, because i know I'm taking a risk every time i step foot on a field.

The largest problem is poor fitting helmets, i see SOOO many players with helmets that are wayyy too loose. Your helmet can't function if its not fitted properly or worn properly.

I have had 2 major concussions before I was 10 years old and not from Football. I dreamed of being ROGER THE DODGER STAUBACH (no Cowboy jokes please). I know the dangers and what happens to you when you get knocked out (one bike wreck head on in to car in 1976 and a stupid kid hit me by accident with a rock in 1978). I got a many hits in Football and remembered my earlier issues and thought oh no. I knew from my previous head injuries Football was risky to play. The concussions I enjoyed in the late 70's educated me along with along with my parents and my Doctor. The NFL has known about the head injury problem for forever. When a pre-teen in the late 70's can comprehend and experience the dangers of concussions. Consequently 40 years later the NFL tries to deflect the dangers until the masses learn about the real concussion story hidden to further the GREED. The NFL was finally exposed. The trend of Corporations taking advantage of people in a negative way is never-ending. I believe we need a ethic review in the USA! NFL knew of the victims were accumulating and didn't do right for the veteran NFL players is a travesty. The older players were NOT highly payed compared to today, thus they are struggling financially and mentally from Football brain damage . Taking care of the never ending affected veteran NFL players should be high on the list and one of the biggest issues facing the NFLPA and NFL. Officiating is another issue(cheap ass NFL won't add more officials during games). If any one read my story I stopped playing Football in 10th grade and played only Basketball for 3 years due to the concerns of concussions, thus missing out on 1 football state championship. I would have started on Offense as a tight end and a defensive end. I threw 4 interceptions in the 7th grade for touchdowns ended my qb career from negative pressure from the coaches and only played 2nd string QB. I never got a football concussion thankfully because I stopped playing.

Okay. Not everyone gets concussions. I’ve played for 3 years and I’m in 8th. I have a 3.6 gpa. Now enough about me. Testing these with a machine doesn’t work. When most of us get tackled, we put our hands out to stop us. I also hate the media when they’re talking about concussions. It’s not only in football. It’s in soccer, rugby, hockey, every sport. I mean hell, you have a higher chance of getting a concussion than in football. If you know how to hit right and how to stay safe, you won’t get one. Worst injury I’ve had was a jammed finger. The reason no one plays aswell is because of what they say about football. I rest my case thank you.

Your more likely to break a bone thank have a concussion and after 3 concussions your not allowed to play. EVER. So if you wanna to play football then do it. You can't escape being injured just face your fears.

Iv played football for 10 years i have had no concussion, I have had my bell rung but have never had a serious head injury. You could change the rules and say no head related contact but the thing is that this won't reduce the head injury rate because of the nature of the sport. You can tell people that all the things that will happen to you when you play football but kids will still can't to play. What I'm trying to say is that people need to stop over reacting, if its not one thing its another.

It because most of the kids hit with their head down. I've been playing football for 8 years (15 now) and I can't think of getting a serious head injury. Break down, heads up and hit with the chest and shoulder.

Concussions are not just caused by getting hit in the head. Concussions are a result of your brain crashing into your skull due to the laws of physics and human anatomy. If I pushed you really hard in the chest and it caused your head to snap forward, when your head eventually stops moving forward and begins moving back to its original point, your brain will continue moving forward due to the fact that your brain is not attached to your skull, causing your brain to collide with your skull, causing a concussion.

man... the fact google puts "shop speed helmets" under this video is sad... speed helmets are the least safe out of all helmets because they're the lightest and the thinnest.
@tamahawk175
6 жыл бұрын
the problem isn't that the helmet protects against linear hits... its that it causes more linear hits... players think their helmets are 100% protecting them... a false sense of security leading to people using their head as a weapon... soccer players that don't wear helmets only get concussions when they use their crown on a header which is 1/1000 in hs level and 1/1000000 in pro level, or when they use their head and miss the ball when lined up with another player, because that excess force of the swing with their head has to go somewhere and it often either transforms into kinetic energy back towards their skull or it hits the player in front of them... if you give a guy 7 inches of padding around all of their body except the weakest parts of the body like the knees, ankles, and neck then people will start targeting those areas and causing injuries way more severe than concussions while also using their head to do it giving them a concussion...

Would some sort of device that attaches the helmet to the shoulder pads restricting its range of movement help concussions, in theory I think it would as it would stop any whiplash effect.

There needs to be sensors in the helmets to indicate just how much force is involved in these hits. Letting a young man play football is letting them engage in an activity that puts there entire future at risk--and the question is for what? what benefit--NONE,

I coached youth football for 9 years and this is a big problem in football. The bottom line is they will never beable to make a helmet to stop such injurys, The best protection is to teach proper tackle technique and the rules for helmet to helmet contact in such force should be automatic ejection from the game, And the pro level should be doing this for setting the example for youth and players all over the world, But lets face it the crowds love big hits that sound like your head just got crushed it makes them excited but yet if it was them the excitement would now be pissing or shitting yourself, Playing safer just shows you are a pro that can avoid such collisions, Helmet spearing or ramming is actually against foot ball rules and should be ejected from the game and 3 offences per seaon should eject you for a full season and in pros they should be fined heavy on top of that,
