I run coil springs for both land and water. But I know a few guys who run long springs for bobcats because they can have a much larger pan

Coil spring traps do need to remove the pan before you spray paint them so the parts do not stick and not work properly.

More springs=faster, yes (MS perhaps). More springs=more powerful hold, no. The levers are what hold the jaws shut. Unless the trapped can depress the levers simutaneously the jaws will not open.

meat trapper I know you concentrated on blind sets but on flat sets and dirt hole sets do you prefer the dog to be closest to the hole or backing?
@Meattrapper
8 жыл бұрын
I prefer to position the trap so that the animal steps between the jaws so the jaws close on the paw like a suitcase. This can be hard to do if you do not know which direction the animal is coming from, but if possible that is what I try for.

When converting a coil spring trap to an "offset" version, might one use a right angle hand held grinder, or even a chopsaw?
@Meattrapper

The quick and dirty way is to pop the jaws out of the frame, reverse them and put them back in the frame.

This is kinda off topic but I feel you're one of my favorite KZitemrs and I really trust you and you're opinion. OK since I live in the South like yourself what is the process and or proper way to handle your fur after its been fleshed and boarded? I now up North where it's nice and cool during trapping season you can hang it and let Nature take its course, but what about Down South??? Thanks for your time and help.

Koot 1971 Dust it with borax, and keep it in a cool dry place if possible. A fan blowing lightly across it helps. If it started to mold dip a rag in acetone and brush the leather lightly and let it dry.

Would a #0 long spring be good for rabbits or should i use conibears
@Meattrapper
9 жыл бұрын
+owen miller Great question. A #0 will hold a rabbit, but a conibear or snare would be better. The problem with rabbits and footholds is the way a rabbit hops it is difficult to get them to step on a small trap pan. You don't have this issue with a conibear or snare. Between a conibear and snare, I have had serious problems snaring rabbits as since they are alive and causing a commotion, they attract hawks and coyotes who usually eat them before I get to them. With a conibear, they will be dead and this will be less of an issue. Thanks for watching and good luck!

Ohio traper You do not have to, but it is a very good idea for land animals. It reduces paw damage and helps hold them.

I know you know full well what your doing with a trap. But given the nature of the video ( for beginners ) you shouldn’t put your hand in the trap . Not so much for yourself but just so newbs don’t see that and pick up a bad habit Love your videos , not trying to be a killjoy
