My thought process on cent missing his shield is that he didnt have enough time to grab it while he escaped the collapse of the empire he and the gladiator were apart of As for his fighting style i believe he developed it while trying to survive alone aswell as gotten a bit of an ego while trying to remember his once beautiful home and life of watching gladiators fight in the colleseum, thus the “incredibilis!” And the gestures he does like thumbs down or “are you not entertained?!?”

Certain sets of Centurion's armor (namely the Achaea set and its variants) seem to be inspired by modo antiquo armor. This armor was from the 15th century and leads me to believe that Centurion is in fact a 15th century LARPer who somehow got his hands on a gladius. This might also explain why he doesn't use a shield.

Dani, I just want to make a correction. At the start of the video you said that centurion wouldn't be able to punch the enemy if he carries a scutum. But it is well knowned that they used their shield to also hit their oponents, this was posible because of the handle (you would hold it with one hand instead of using your arm as the greeks), this gave them the possibility to use the scutum ofensively and defencevely. This means that his current moves can be made even with a shield. Sorry for any grammatical mistake if I made one, english is not my first language

I meant to put this on the other video. But the Roman Caliglia wre studded on the bottom, and that they did use kicks often in battle usually to hit an enemies chins, or feet (early on such as during the Gallic wars some enemies didn't even wear armor, so a single kick would deal a lot of damage) Also, Romand wore a tunic underneath their armor, and you can see that on some of armor pieces, but oddly enough it ends exactly where the chainmail does on some parts, so it makes me think that the Cwnteuion added chainmail to the lower half for some reason. As for how he acts. I believe that he comes from a more disciplined unit elsewhere in Ashfield, and coming to a volatile border, with little "Roman" presence he would need to do away with his shield as it wouldn't be useful. I also think he was an extremely skilled solider (like Aurelian) and probably dresses similar to the others as a way to mock him, and make fun the others for not being able to win the war agaisnt the others already. I also believe that he GREATLY enjoys fighting. Likely meaning he was on a border that was volatile, and probably fought all the time out of formation, and due to his skill out of formation he was sent over. In other words. Extremely skilled, and cocky soldier sent to go beat the fuck outta everyone. And yes, they didn't wear pants until I believe Diocletian's reforms, where faceplate's were also becoming popular around this era. Comitatenses were the ones where PANTS were brought into play (and also used mail more), so a Roman Soldier wearing pants isn't too far out there.

Hey Dani! Loved both of these centurion analyses. I mostly agree with everything. (also Ubi why can't we have Chad Roman thighs instead of virgin Valkyrie chopsticks) Regarding the ornaments, there is one more contender that you didn't mention that would be plausible. It was part of the Odyssey of the Misthios mask outfit. It's called Strength of the Phalanx and it looks like it's made from horse hair, has three parts which are black indefinitely and two parts in between them which change colour. It is held by a single golden statuette of an eagle or falcon or gryphon (I can't really tell, it's ears are too big and there is some strange sphere on its forehead) The best match for the black horse hair colour I found is the Shadows colour swatch (rep 11 lv18)

Hey man, amazing video! Can't wait to see what comes next. Quick question, though. At 29:50, you mention that the plume is going the wrong way, however with the name of "century" and not "centurion", maybe it was intended to make him look like a regular legionnaire rather than a centurion specifically?
@GoGoDani
4 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but Legionaries only wear them during parades really and it doesn't make sense that they would call it "Century" and not make it an actual Centurion plume. That being said, maybe that's what they wanted to go for. Ubisoft has shown that the know what they, on some level, know what they are talking about so maybe this choice was intentional. There is no way to know without asking them and I don't think they would respond if I were to. Anyways, thank you for watching!

@ThePloingusMan
3 жыл бұрын
I know I'm a year late but I really like these videos and would like to input some of my opinion. I feel like the armor in this game isn't completely historically accurate to a rl roman centurion because that would be more the inspiration for the armor instead of the basis, the armor is also probably not completely accurate because the strategy and type of warfare in the game is much different to that of the roman empire so it would require different armor, similar to that of the regular knights, such as the pants and bracers. That's also probably the reason for the chain to be under the armor, similar to some of the other knights in the game because it is more 1 on 1 bouts than group fighting like what would be common in roman warfare, so you would need more individual protection. Anyway this is just what I thought is the reason to why the armor the way it is, or it could just be some of that ubisoft magic. But eh, love the videos keep em up
@TheGhOsTeRnEx
3 жыл бұрын
So I do know this is very late but... Roman legionaries during, the dacian war (use in other periods and regions is debated) were issued segmentata-like arm protection, called a manica (only for the right arm of course, since the left would be protected by the scutum), which looked much like the in game armorpiece called ‚Dalmatia Arms‘. The main difference between its in game and historical iteration beeing that a manica would protect the entire length of the right arm an not just its fore-arm.

I think those little disks are meant to be medals or decorations of some sort, or in some representations I’ve seen, it’s meant to show whose the Legate. Also the Dalmatia arms very much look to me like manica, which was a type of armour made up of plates going down the arm. I’m not sure how much it was used but it existed, I’ve seen it in several illustrations, cosplays and re-enactments. And it explicitly went down the fight arm instead of the left, presumably because the left was covered by the shield

To add to what someone else (Óðinn) has mentioned regarding pants, and if you're still reading comments under this video, @GoGoDani, the climate from Northern Italy/just above Southern Gaul (France) can justify wearing them from autumn to early spring (winter in Lugdunum -current Lyon- is cold enough, I wouldn't not wear pants if possible). They're called braccae, and are generally known as a Gaul piece of clothing, were used by the Germans too… and down to Rome and in the Roman army, even pre-Roman invasion of Gaul. The word is initially celtic, specifically Gaulish, then Latin, cognate to Scottish Gaelic "briogais", Irish "briste", Welsh "brycan/brogau. And then cognate to English "breeches", Spanish "braga", French "braguette", Dutch "broek", and Russian "бпюки" (brûki). Most of those mean "pants", except for, ironically, the French, that has evolved to designate the fly of a pair of pants. Source (much more complete on the French page, sadly) : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braccae . We tend to think as Romans dressing lightly (and even us French people), mostly due to climate, but if Italy's climate is mostly Mediterranean, when Romans went up to regions where the climate is not so Mediterranean, like just beyond the utmost South-Eastern part of France, it gets cold really fast in winter. The Gladiator not wearing them is I think also a consequence of climate, too. We have arenas/coliseums in the South of France, but not much, if at all, North of the regions that are on the Mediterranean coast. There is the coliseum of Lutecia (Paris) some other very minor arenas in other parts of France, but nothing significant. Gladiator fights seem to not have been so spread where the climate was colder. So basically there were gladiators in Paris, but that's about it. Just like when the Romans went on the Southern Mediterranean coast (North Africa, in Southern Egypt), or later deep in the East Mediterranean Coast (current Jordan and current Saudi Arabia, which was just called Arabia), it got arid and very hot pretty fast, they probably had to adapt their clothing accordingly too. Middle and North of France are not UK cold, but it's somewhere in-between, which still makes it pretty cold in winter ; it's still an oceanic climate. Just like the galea, braccae are initially Gaulish, and have been adopted by neighboring cultures, most likely through trade and cultural exchanges. That includes Romans, and there is a significant portion of time that is shared by Romans and Gauls that's called "Gallo-Roman" ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallo-Roman_culture ). Most of it is seen by historians in Gaul, but it then has transpired into current Italy, particularly during Roman invasions. TL;DR : Galea and braccae are of Gaulish invention, and have started being culturally adopted by Romans even before invasions, out of probable necessity due to colder climate. Great video overall, I love all those analyses, been binging them since yesterday.

This cent is very heavily armored so it makes sense to ditched the shield Yet a two handed weapon would then be the logical choice as plate is like having shields all over your body. And for the why, well because is kind of like a secret thing but the cent is actually a byzantine centurion, wich where not only medieval but also entirely fitting for the knights faction, they were the eastern knights that defended constantinopla to the last man standing, in the game many of the armor sets are cleare nods top, as the scaled armor with the weird Bell helmet is nigh 100 byzantine and the acaya or creta armors resemble to a great extend the looks of emperor constantino the 11th who died defending the last Roman bailif circa 1450. In fact tesalia and acaya I belief are places that constantino campaigned in

Regarding the pants I didn't search for the source, so if somebody would kindly refute or affirm this, that would be great. I read a series of books for kids from Grolier titled "I wonder why (insert subject)" and in one of them they stated since the Roman Empire spans a a massive area including regions with snows, some of their soldiers would have wool pants. This is partly the reason why I don't see Roman wearing pants as a problem, maybe Roman is just cold in his nether regions.

The reason why cent has pants is because they keep his bulging thighs from exploding outwards You see, centurions pants have been blessed by the gods and don’t expand outward Therefore his thighs can’t blow open and lay siege to everything in a 2 mile radius And his pants were crafted around his legs so they could fit

Also, I've just discovered where the Achaea Centurion comes from, and it's not Roman at all but Spanish. It was ceremonial armor made for Philip II, which can be found here with this excellent video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t56t13-wkZWgfKg

I definitely will be doing a Shinobi analysis at some point because I think that he is going to be a very entertaining character to talk about. For now, if you haven't seen my most recent video talking about all the new executions, I suggest watching it as I give a few thoughts about Shinobi there.

If they add new armor for centurion, I want something similar to tbe baetica armor but replace the fur with the sleeves from compania and the scarf from savia or epirius. I don't like fur.
