After Paramount bought the film rights from Hemingway, the studio was approached by the Franco government and told that if Franco was mentioned, Spain would use it's influence to get ALL of Paramount's movies banned in European Fascist nations. This threat happened before the U.S. entered WWII. Considering this was an expensive Technicolor film, the studio buckled under, which enraged Hemingway. Nevertheless, when the film starts with ''SPAIN 1937.'' we all know WHO the villain is.

Yeah this isn’t a great adaptation. Gary Cooper looks a bit too old to play Jordan (always pictured him as a young Gary Sinise while reading the book) and some of the other casting is pretty bad too, especially using non-Spanish actors for Anselmo and Maria. The tone also feels a pretty off, especially when it comes to the ending; the last moments we spend with Jordan in the book are quiet, but here we get this bombastic background score the whole time, while he lights up the Fascists. In the book, it simply ends with him drawing a bead on the Fascist lieutenant and we don’t know whether he kills him or just passes out. Be great to see a modern remake that aims for something a bit more akin to that.

Yes, Garry Cooper does not fit the knockabout foreign freedom fighter, nor does he reciprocate nor deserve the affection Inga threw at him. His body language is strange. It was as if he just went to Spain to get shot. But then maybe Hemmingway knew all this. Inga was perfect, but Katina Paxinou was the star.

Bergman plays a young lady who falls in love for the first time. She’s giddy and yes, like a schoolgirl who’s never been kissed before. Nobody else could have pulled it off with the short hair and all. Her innocence & giddiness was new to the silver screen as opposed to voluptuous,, vamps before her. Great movie based on an excellent novel. Hemingway at his best.

Hemingway wrote the book and published it in 1940. At that time Communist Russia was an ally of the U.S. and Britain against the Axis. So Hemingway tries to justify the American Jordan taking sides with the Spanish Communists on the Republican side, yet he tries to be sly with claiming that the Spanish were being used by both sides, when in reality the Spanish Communists had taken over Spain's government, and had gotten support from Communist Moscow, and burned Churches in Spain and were also planning to end Spain's Monarchs. Spanish general Franco, a Nationalist, stood in the way of the Spanish Communists and Soviet Russia's attempt to takeover Spain. If Franco had not gotten military support from Italy and Germany to fight against the Spanish Communists supported by Moscow, then Spain today would have been a Communist country like Cuba, except in western Europe. European Communists have tried to get control of the governments of Italy, Germany, and even Britain also. Thus the real facts make Hemingway's book For Whom The Bell Tolls as Communist propaganda.

When Gary Cooper's character is asked about his father, and he says his father voted the Republican ticket all his life, which is pointing to the U.S. Republican party, I don't recall that actually being in Hemingway's book. The U.S. Republican party is not the same type political party as the Spanish Republicans of Spain's Civil War. U.S. Republicans are not... Communists. The U.S. party whose political policy is best aligned with Communism is the U.S. Democratic party system. Nor was Spain's Communist Republican government anything like the American Constitutional Republic. Even the Vietnamese Communist Ho Chi Minh tried to use the American Declaration of Independence as a tool joined with Communist ideology when he became leader of North Vietnam. Such an idea is an oxymoron, just as this movie trying to link the American Republican party with Spain's Communist Republican government of the Spanish Civil War.

Precisely. No brilliant daredevil plans, no psychological conflicts pulling you in different directions, and no great mysteries. An ok movie that could have been half its length, with the acting of Cooper and the incomparably glowing sight of Bergman helping to prop it up. Ingrid did far better acting in other roles but here she did not have much to work with. Since they are both smitten about 0.5 seconds after first laying eyes on each other, the love story has no real foundation or meaning. Falling for someone simply because she has perhaps the most beautiful face ever seen on film is neither novel, nor interesting, nor a real tug on the heart.

@@frankadams2401 I checked on the internet, just to be sure that I am not oblivious to some commonly known internet expression, but nothing came up for "19-4". Could you kindly explain what it means? As for Tamiroff, I agree that he played Pablo really well, but IMHO it wasn't a big enough role to have a major impact, or even to win best supporting. For me, it was Paxinou who truly added the most to the film, and she truly deserved her Oscar. But the nominations for best picture and actress were ridiculous, although a quick look at the Oscar results indicates a relatively lightweight picture year.
