It is a shame that ripe pawpaws don't ship well. I hope you get to try the fruit eventually! I have never been to South America, but my grandfather is from Argentina so I wish to go down there and check out what fruits and foods are abundant down there that we don't get in the United States.

I live in south Brazil, so I'm actually close to Argentina! Beautiful place, I hear. And I also hope to get my hands on some pawpaws. Eat some good ones for me! @@flintandfish

They are highly sought after, which makes them hard to find. I find it funny that many people don't know what pawpaws are, but the ones who do tend to go pick a ridiculous amount. I would go try it out again and go where others haven't because of the walk or drive. Also look to see if there is a community garden/orchard that has any growing near you. I got so desperate to try the fruit I ordered some cold-stratified seeds online and am trying to raise saplings on my own if that says anything, haha. keep trying to find them though, they will taste even sweeter when you do find them!

Time/locaiton is important! I used to run into the same issues. Try to find patches/groves with many different trees of various ages early in the summer and check between late August and early-mid October. I found most of my fruit on trees that were 15-20 ft tall and had a trunk diameter of about 3+ inches. There were some outliers though so take it with a grain of salt. The secret for my success was going into relatively heavy brush far from trails and paying attention to the number of individual plants in an area. Shake every older tree (gently) at the base even if you don't see fruit sometimes they hide behind leaves.

Harvest time may be different for you I am not super familiar with the growing season on the Eastern side of the US. But gennerally late summer, ealry fall is what I have heard/seen.
