Winter Chanterelle Mushrooms are easily found in the late fall and winter months along the coastal areas of British Columbia. You can usually find them at the base of trees or next to logs in very damp and well-shaded forests. There are also a few varieties of these around BC and on Vancouver Island, so you might see them in various shapes and shades.
I seem to find them almost everywhere I look if the timing is right. They pop up in great numbers. Even though they are tiny there are plenty of them to help you make a wild foraged meal.
Winter chanterelles (AKA yellow foot chanterelles or Funnel Chanterelles) are much smaller and thinner than Pacific golden chanterelles. Their stems are tall and narrow relative to their caps, and are mostly hollow. The underside of a winter chanterelle cap shows the characteristic chanterelle veins or wrinkles.
I find a lot around the Fraser Valley mountains during the months of October and November. So Get out there this fall and give it a try!
