Thank you for clarifying the shadow that gets cast on the Sassafras tree. It's a wonderfully beneficial plant with a variety of uses. Uses that span the fields of culinary arts, the fragrance industry, botanical chemistry, modern medical research and homeopathic remedies. It seems like Wikipedia highlights Sassafras as a tree which contains Safrole, an oil which "may be carcinogenic in rats", or that this aromatic aldehyde is a precursor to the drug(s) MDA/MDMA. *Side note: It takes just as many steps in synthesis to derive Piperidine & Piperonyl(another MDA precursor) from black peppercorns, but Wiki doesn't smear this common seasoning with the idea that it's drug related, like it does Sassafras. Anyway, you made this chip on my shoulder a bit more tolerable with your clarification. I sell a great deal of high quality, sun-dried Sassafras on eBay, and between the FDA reporting that Safrole is carcinogenic in the 1960's(new studies show "it's just as carcinogenic as breathing indoor air", according to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), overharvesting of the tree by American Colonists, and it's drug manufacturing usage reputation- I believe the plant has had a tough existence. So your keen insight is much appreciated. As a Horticultural Researcher, this plant means so much to me that it was the focus of my Senior thesis. Thanks for this well-rounded video.

Thank you Mitch. I am also a friend of Sassafras (as well as a former Pharmaceutical chemist) and you definitely know your chemistry. (I too miss Shulgin).

That is the most Eurocentric explanation I've ever heard of any flora or fauna. Something is used for thousands of years by humans and you talk about how it was "discovered" and how certain islands were "discovered" etc. Jeez Louise
