Although slightly ( off topic ? ) you should advise your viewers that these small Lead - acid batteries should ALWAYS be fully charged ( 13.9 Volts max ! ) , before putting away for a few days .... so MANY folk use them for a while ( halogen torches ? ) and leave them partially discharged ... the battery is likely to " Sulphate " and become defective .... DAVE™🛑

Yes they should definitely helps from Sulphate

The positive spike is charging the battery... The negative fluctuations are the result of the switch turning ON and perturbing the EMF stored in the coil. This is a joule thief circuit, you're getting frequency lowering (the forced oscillator's rate, 12.79Khz) by using the 2K impedance resistor on the feedback winding which is tightly coupled to the output winding. Resistive frequency lowering on coiled systems was investigated and presented nicely by Don Smith.

Mmm..the resistor essentially acts like a damper and "lowers" the resonant frequency
@craigpierce7996

@@tanmayvadhera4250 It's a bit more complex.. The oscillator does have a dampening reaction to the resistor, but impedance changes are the actual knob behind the change. We're saying the same thing.

The negative spike / flyback charges the battery just like all my pulse motors

@@kenergy1707 Both sides of the inductor spike, its inherently differential. It depends on your point of reference. But the scope probe placement in the vid inverts the spike. In the vid, the lower oscillations are a result of the switch closure disturbing the remaining back emf in the coil. It oscillates into stray capacitance, which is why the amplitude is not steady.

Awesome work! At 6:20 you disconnect the battery to connect the cap dump. The battery is discharging, do the batteries hold a negative charge or do they discharge back to level prior to charging ?

Thanks Yes when the battery is charged then stoped the battery settles it’s voltage It should be charged to 15 v then it will settle at about 13.15

How long does your cap dump stays on? Until the voltage between the caps and battery equalize?
@kenergy1707
7 ай бұрын
My cap dump has a timed dump Depending on what zener if it’s 15 it will go to battery voltage if it’s 20 zener it will till 16 volts so the higher the zener the bigger gap between battery voltage and zener will turn off
