Thank you for being a man and stepping up and telling it like it is. Almost nobody wants to talk about the cost of machine shop work. Or they make it sound like it’s a very small incidental price. But of course it is not. Thank you for making that clear good luck on your build👍

Pretty much average pricing. Fun to see the differences in costs between towns, cities and countries. I am in Canada and we have similar pricing here. Some shops a lil more on this operation but a lil less on that operation sorta thing. In the end, pretty close to the same price. 👍

No doubt you could get a reman stock build for cheaper. An ATK stage 1 351W 385 HP long block is $4900 on Summit, w/o intake and other pieces. I'll probably have $6-7k in this engine when all is said and done.

@@MarksMuscleCarGarage you cant compare a reman, built on a production line by semi skilled workers to a fully machined and blueprinted engine.... you get what you pay for and nothing is free. people dont know what they dont know.

How long did it take for the machine shop to complete the work? I just got back my 96 351w from my f150. It's uncanny how close our builds are, minus I didn't have the heads ported and polished, just a valve job. Total $3742.07. Took a year and 3 months!
@MarksMuscleCarGarage

Not long compared to yours... About 3-4 months but some of that was from waiting on parts, e.g. waiting on valve springs to assemble the heads.

Would a rebuild like this provide more power than stock or just “restore” to factory power?
@MarksMuscleCarGarage
14 күн бұрын
Most of it was same as for a stock rebuild except the extra work on the cylinder heads, and some of the parts that I used such as forged pistons, aftermarket connecting rods, and solid roller cam, which all were used to make more power.

I’m in SOMD. What shop did you use? What things would you exclude if you were doing a budget build?
@MarksMuscleCarGarage
Жыл бұрын
I went to Mark Small machine in Westminster. If you were going with a stock build and not for performance, on the cylinder heads, you would just need a valve job, and not the porting. If you are re-using stock parts on the rotating assembly (rods, pistons and crank), you could get by without doing the align hone and balancing. As far as turning down the crank, that depends on how much wear there is / how out of round they are, so you might just need to have the crank journals polished. Also, you might not need to bore the cylinders depending on how much wear there is. You might be able to get by with just a hone on the cylinders, but I'd have the machine shop mic the cylinders and go with what they recommend. You could use gapless rings such as by Total Seal if you don't want to bore the cylinders and wear is not too excessive. So you could get by with just new rings, bearings, and a valve job, cleaning and hone. Checking for cracks (magnaflux) in iron blocks and heads is added insurance. Milling of the heads and block assures you have a good seal on the head gaskets, but some people skip that too on a budget build.

Thanks. E street heads would have been good, but I already had the Windsor SR heads and wanted to give them a refresh. Also wanted a bump in compression so went with the flat tops instead of the typical oval dish in factory 351W.
