I’m willing to bet the fluid was never changed before. The owner’s manual says to change it at 150,000 miles. I cannot see how you can say it needs a new transmission based off the fluid smell and the scan you did. I’ve heard of many people having shifting problems with these transmissions and they change the fluid and it shifts perfect afterwards. So the logical thing to do is to put new fluid in it first and go from there. And some people also had problems that were corrected by changing out the shift solenoids. There are also a number of diagnostic tests that can be done. A new transmission should not be an immediate proposed remedy, lol.

How sad car owners rarely service their transmissions. I service (Oil and oil filter) mine every 20,000 miles

Yeah, it's rare to have people come in for a service on the transmission. And these escapes and fusions are super hard on the transmission fluid. If I would have one, I'd definitely do it at least every 30k. Easy to just drain and fill it.

Hear that the 2.5 liter non turbo engine is very reliable in the escape. Seems the weak link is the transmission. Had thought of buying a low mileage late model escape. Drove the C max hybrid seems maybe a better choice with the E cvt transmission? Focus, escape and c max all use the same platform. Have a 16 focus w/ manual gearbox it's a great car.

You are a wise man. Transmission fluid is cheap, transmissions not so cheap.
