You don’t need the tool if your engine is out and everything is easy to see and get to. I pulled the camshaft position synchronizer out not knowing wth it was. My ‘99’s harmonic balancer is rusty and nearly impossible to read. I took out the plug from the #1 piston and feel for the air but that’s going to just get me close.

In that case you've got a bigger problem in that you wont be able to stab the CPS or distributor anyway. Marking your harmonic balancer is a basic requirement for stabbing a CPS or distributor, so either clean it or buy a new one.

I have the 5.0l mountaineer, and it has a 3 wire sensor with the half moon (longer tooth) synchronizer. How do you set that one? You do need the tool.

My 93 Ford Explorer Sport V6 4.0 cam position sensor has a sight glass with a needle. Do I need an alignment tool for that?

This really makes no sense cause the sensor can only be installed one way...
