We have a 2006 Navigator with 219K miles that does NOT have the rattle and runs like a sewing machine. We also have a 2013 Expedition with 119K that DOES have the start up rattle. It runs really well, also. I haven't been able to find out the difference between the two engines so far but there is a big difference in performance. By the time the Expedition gets almost up to speed, the Navigator is already way up there and cruisin'.

As a word of advice, use an oil filter with an anti drain back valve. The top end of the engine is always the last thing to get oil and the first to lose it when the engine is off. Some noise is to be expected when you start an engine when it is sitting at 10F for 8 hours. I like to run the Motorcraft synthetic blend with a Motorcraft filter in my 01 Ranger and I have not had any issues in 145K miles.

I've been having this issue since my 2005 F150 reached 150,000 miles. That was back in 2013. It's now past 225,000 miles, pulled many many trailers, driven to 80 mph, etc. Other than the noise on startup, I have not seen any other issue. The only thing I recommend is keep up with your oil changes (I do mines every 3,000, not 5,000**) and use Motorcraft oil filters (they have the anti-back flow valve that other oil filters dont) **I use my truck to pull trailers (some at 10,000 lbs) and carry heavy loads, along with commuting. So thats why I change the oil more frequently Lots of people that had terrible experiences with the 5.4L were often people that often lapsed on the oil changes.

My 2010 does the same thing, the phasers have been making noise since 100k miles and I just hit 201k miles. Secret to these motors is oil changes. I too do mine every 3k, and do them myself. It still pulls our camper that is 8k pounds in the mountains in Arizona without any problem. Most of the people that knock the 5.4 either never owned one or never took care of one properly. There are millions of these motors on the road and you only hear of the horror stories.

Mike Caissie - No you do not have to worry. Now if it continues to rattle after you start it, then you could hae a bad tensioner or stretched chain which will call for a major service of replacing the timing chains, guides and tensioners which is about a $2,000 job. But that little rattle at startup is fine. I have seen it so much on these trucks.

I see comments that the noise is ok for now. Don't buy into that. The likely cause is failed gaskets of the timing chain tensioner (s). If so this means that oil supply to the top end is also compromised and will lead to serious head and camshaft damage, along with the eventual catastrophic damage to the chain guides. It all leads to serious engine failure. Noise is your best diagnostic, if you hear something then fix the problem.

These engines have developed serious issues with the plastic guides breaking into pieces as a result of the bleed-down of the tensioners, esp. on the passenger side. Then the left tension guide will wear down to the point where the tensioner plunger protrudes thru the metal rail and the chain rubs on it. The slack chain also rubs the cover and the tone ring and sends all this metal material into the oil pan and circulation. Hopefully, you got rid of the truck before it got this bad. I had a 2002 Mercury with the 4,6 modular engine with the same crappy plastic guide rails, but it was 200K miles before it started rattling. You would think that the engineers could come up with a better material to make the guides, and adding a ratcheting mechanism to the tensioners rather than after the fact. Then the plastic guides wouldn't end up in the oil pan and necessitate a complete timing chain and phaser replacement prematurely. I was once loyal to ford, but lately??

Sounded like exhaust leakage at the manifold gasket. I have heard the 3rd-gen Explorer is known to have an issue with one of the manifolds leaking at startup, but seating once things warm-up. This rattling is actually the hydraulic valve lifters. Like it was explained in the video, these lifters need oil pressure to operate so as you shut your truck off, the oil leaves the lifters and deems them empty until next startup. When your truck first starts, these lifters are empty, causing a clacking or rattling noise. It will take 15 seconds to about a minute for the lifters to completely fill back up, depending on how long ago you last started the pickup. If it continues, there may be a problem. Hope this helps!

@mds1986ms

@@paulsosa1872 Make sure you always use a motorcraft oil filter. They have a silucone diaphragm inside that acts as a check valve. Fram, wix, mobile1 upon shut down will allow all the oil from the top end to drain into the sump/oil pan which cause you to have dry start ups and no oil pressure for the first few seconds the engine is running. sorry buddy, the tension on the tensioners is not held by oil pressure they are spring loaded, this is why they have locking pins when you first buy one. The oil that shoots through them is meant to lubricate the chain. you are on the right track of what could be causing this problem but the wrong explanation. more than likely the chain guides have broken inside and it rattles because the chain is banging around the block and timing cover once the oil lubricates it the noise goes away. But I will never say I cant be wrong.
@F150Lariat54Triton
8 жыл бұрын
+bako1208 Yes, they have a spring, but they are hydraulic also. The base tension they have with the spring alone is not enough to keep the chain tight. On the back side, they have a seal which keeps oil from leaking out as it flows from the block to the tensioner which looks to be made of some kind nitrile rubber or something that tends to get blown out after a while and causes startup noise. As it runs, it builds that pressure back up in the tensioner that leaked down when the engine was off and then no noise.
@bako1208
8 жыл бұрын
+F150Lariat54Triton You are right about the seals they do blow out. I was actually able to fix this on an expedition by adding some RTV. I know we're not supposed to but it worked. As far as the oil if you look carefully at the back of the tensioners there is no port for the oil to push the piston also, once installed, you can see how tight those springs hold the rails in place no need for further tension. I am not trying to belittle you in any way I hope I don't come off that way. It's just something I am sure about. In any case once those seals break there is no lubrication to the chain and the problems begin so whether your right or I'm right doesn't matter it's the same fix.
@freddyhollingsworth5945
5 жыл бұрын
The springs get weak after a few years. The only solution is to buy the metal tensioners with the little ratcheting arm that keeps the chain tight in the absence of oil pressure. The way the chains sling around the engine, it is the one on the driver side that will bust that chain guide.

Hello greetings from Ecuador, I have a f150 year 2010 4.6lt V8 I lost oil pressure and the engine sounded very strong, change the entire distribution kit, oil pump and water pump. But when you turn it on, the right side of the engine sounds very loud as if it were a snore, just when you start it, mechanics here have told me that they are hydraulic oil lifter , it would help me to know if that is the cogs of the crankshaft please

Wrong grade oil and oil type will do it.Book calls for 5w20 synthetic oil only.Jasper Engines and transmissions has a video on this and they found the factory oil pump is at fault.The 3 valve 5.4 uses the original oil pump from the 2 valve version with an aluminum backing plate.The backing plate flexes and the oil gets dumped right back in the oil pan.They throw this oil pump away and put in a Melling M360 oil pump in it's place.

+wafrederick I don't believe startup noise is related to an oil pump. Lack of oil pressure should cause a constant noise and not a noise that lasts for 1 second or less at startup. A noise that lasts for a second is a bleed-down of oil pressure somewhere while the engine is off. Usually a tensioner bleeding off as I talked about in the video, or possibly lifters leaking down. I use 5W-20 Motorcraft and my aftermarket oil pressure gauge shows factory spec oil pressure at hot idle which is 25 PSI. I've got 134,000 on it now and runs perfect.

Oh it's a problem, silent killer really. It's not just bleeding down, there's oil that's coming out of the back of that tensioner while it's running, that's causing a loss of pressure at the farthest point of the oiling system that the sensor at the oil pump isn't going to warn you about. The way the oiling system is laid out, the passenger camshaft is the last part to receive lubrication. The camshafts in these engines don't have bearings, so when that camshaft gets starved for oil it will start eating it's seats in the head. Camshaft starts getting sloppy in it's rotation, followers start wearing funny on the lobes. Next thing you know a follower pops out and destroys something because they are only held in by tension, a tension which no longer exists. Now you need a new camshaft, new followers, and maybe a new head. Oh, and you still haven't fixed the source of the problem yet. I thought the same as you did once. My Gen 1 had leaking tensioners too, but at the time I didn't know it was a hydraulic tensioner that was leaking. The few times I had done timing chains, the tensioners worked off of a spring. The Gen 1 had about 350k on the odometer, and it didn't do it at any other time except if it sat for a while, so I just chalked it up to high mileage and ignored it for well over a year. Shit hit the fan one day on my way back from getting a new tire mounted on a rim from my Caravan due to a flat. Cruising along about 60 mph and then just dead. Didn't want to restart at first, but it finally did after some coaxing. I had about 9 miles to go. She ran like crap of course, but the old girl got me home one last time. The really ironic thing that I had a laugh about was the night before I had randomly came across a Ford tech who has a KZitem channel about 5.4s, and they are his bread and butter, especially the 3Vs. I discovered the mistake I had been making and had planned on tearing into it the next day to do a timing job, inspect for other worn parts to replace, pray the camshaft wasn't shot, etc. But I woke up that Saturday to a flat tire on my commuter. Wouldn't have mattered, the damage was done. Because of the rust eating at the bottoms of the doors and floor pan that you couldn't see yet, but it wouldn't be long, I opted not to fix her. Still miss that damn truck, but that's why I've got a later model Expedition in the driveway. Great vehicles, and once you swap out the engineering mistakes for revised parts, you've got a 500k vehicle so long as the oil changes are regular. These days I'm a lot more educated on the 5.4, and while you CAN ignore a leaking tensioner or a little rattle in the VCT or a few followers, you ARE in fact allowing damage to occur and shortening the life of the engine. Sorry for the long winded post.
@HazardWolfCorp

Saying that it is a normal characteristic of this truck is what is wrong here, that mentality is what leads people to not fix their engines and then boom, dead motor, maintenance is key folks, unless you have the thousands of dollars to just throw around to get a new truck every time one fails, pretty sure most people do not.

Yeah, mine has also been doing that as long as I can remember. I guess these 3V engines are just noisy. I have put an oil pressure gauge on my truck. Ford says it should be no lower than 25 PSI at hot idle. Mine is in between 25-30 PSI at hot idle which is in spec. I have always used Motorcraft oil and fiters as well and changed it every 3,000 miles, yet it still makes that rattle noise between 800-1,000 RPMs when hot. Previous owner records show he also used Motorcraft oil and filters and always changed on time at the dealer. Unless there was sludge (with my short oil change intervals, there shouldn't be) I don't see what else could cause the noise. However, Ford has posted a TSB stating that the rattle between 800-1,000 RPMs when hot is normal for these engine. And it seems to be because mine was doing that noise when I got it at 42,000 miles. I have 111,000 miles now and the noise is not louder, nor has anything performance-wise changed. It runs perfect.

Tensioners is a major issue. I dont think this is tensioners. With the tensioners since theyre hydraulic its a gasket that fails and bleeds oil so you'll see lower oil pressure and it can cause the right side head to fail since its the last in line on the oil circuit. Tensioners is a major problem because it will start eating away at the cover and oul pump you can possibly jump a tooth and then your pistons are going to slam into your valves. Though this seems like the lock up on the cam phasers which isnt that big of an issue Like to know how long this truck lasted.

I'm not sure exactly. Unless they didn't put something back together right, it shouldn't do it. But it shouldn't have anything to do with the 10W-30. It may actually be your hydraulic valve lash adjusters pumping down over night which can also make a noise like this on first start up and it goes away when oil pressure hits them and pumps them back up.
@MemphisMojo15s

***** have you seen videos from Scotty Kilmer on here? I asked him if they were rattling what would happen, and he said eventually they'll break and cause more engine damage. He said they're loose because they're failing and that will make them rattle. Idk, but I hope that's not your case.
@PowerStrokeLover73

2010V6RAV4 I don't believe this particular truck in the video has timing chain noise. This is hydraulic valve lash adjuster noise. The lash adjusters leak off their oil pressure after a little bit of the engine being off and they rattle until the oil pressure hits them and pumps them all back up. Simply just replacing the lash adjusters that are leaking down will cure this noise. If he had timing chain noise, then chances are it would have broken a chain guide by now since they're made of a cheap plastic.

Put a finger over each coil one at a time and if you feel the knocking on any of them then bam you found your issue. Loose and/or bad spark plug. I had same issue on mine in cold. Went through the whole phaser/ lifter b.s. that didn't fix it. And just because you get the spark plugs and coil packs brand new and you still hear knock doesn't mean it wasn't the coils and plugs. I had to get replace 1 plug 2 times. Hope this helps.

I was wondering about the noises different cars make on startup and they don't always seem to be manufacturer specific,when I first bought my Chevy LS1 engined car in 2008,it was quiet on startup and the car had been neglected by at least one of the other owners.Since then,I have changed the oil pan gasket (August last year) as that was leaking oil,that was causing the top end to lose some oil pressure as the gasket also seals off the main oil supply to the engine (the main oil supply is sealed off by the gasket).After doing that, I had hydraulic lifter noise (1 is still noisy at times) and the engine makes a noise as if the lubrication system is aerated for a few seconds on startup if the engine has been sitting for a few hours,the engine had some black sludge in it so it wouldn't surprise me if the lifters were full of that too,the engine has done over 300,000 kilometres (about 184,000 miles) and I've done about 120,000 kilometres (about 74,000 miles) since I bought the car (like this one) upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7a/Holden_Commodore_VY_SS.jpg .When my uncle was travelling (my cousin was apple picking) I noticed his Ford Falcon (like this one) www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2006/09/12/smh12M.jpg made the same noise as the Commodore after sitting for a couple of hours,his had done less than 150,000 kilometres (92,000 miles) so I am wondering if the "whooshing" sound I hear on startup is normal,as if the inside of the engine is getting very "drenched" with oil.It seems to be strange how both a Holden (which is a General Motors company here in Australia) makes the same sound as a Ford on startup.
@F150Lariat54Triton
9 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about the GM engines, but I do know that the Ford Modular Engines (particularly the 3 valve due to the variable cam timing system) are very noisy engines. These start up noises can either be related to the timing chain, or lash adjusters (overhead cam hydraulic lifters) leaking down over a period of time of being shut down causing slack between the rocker arm and valve stem where the rocker pushes open the valve. Sometimes even a faulty anti-drainback valve in the oil filter causing dry starts. Usually these sounds are normal and do not cause damage. I have 124,000 miles on this truck now (about 200,000 km) and no issues from it.
