it always amazes me how much engineering goes into building a automobile, that we all take for granted because it's been done this way for over 100 years.

+SteelCity1981 I work at the Rouge and it shocks me everyday. Every single little thing has to be engineered. Something as simple as making and building a reinforcement for a hood. It requires a couple workers, several robots, and many more parts for something small that the buyer will never see. But it goes even farther than just engineering. I read once where Apple said it was successful because it tried to not engineer everything and brought in "human element" type people. For instance, an engineer would design a keyboard but they had a physical therapist show that that particular design could tire out your hands after a while and make the experience less friendly. So they had input into making a better keyboard and they had teaching professionals who had input into the operating system to make it more friendly to learn and use and so forth. This is being more utilized with car manufactures today as well. Its no surprise that Apple is looking into making cars.

Come work a shift at the end of July here at KCAP for ten hours in a plant that does not have air-conditioning and tell me we need to be wearing uniforms. When it's 105 outside it's 120-130 inside here with all the machines heat and the outside heat inside a metal building.

+northlander honestly one of the most mistaken comments I've read. Machines malfunction ALL the time, they are not perfect. They do not self correct and if a person doesn't catch the problem or correct a malfunction or mistake the machine will continue as if nothing is wrong, producing imperfect work the entire time. The reason these machines seem to function so well to people like you is because trained professional HUMANS are watching them closely and making sure they function as they are supposed to. Machines and robots DO make mistakes, and humans correct them. Just as humans build them and repair them.

Like me.. I made a good living off building them. Before machines. You would have been putting the same part on by hand for 30 years. Then hope the person wasn't having a bad day and messed up that one job they had. This is why vehicles are more reliable then they were 30 years ago. Less mistakes are made..
