Not only Fords suffer this.... Any Solid Front axle truck with less than perfect steering stabilizers or an incorrect wheel alignment can experience the Death Wobble. Most famously Jeeps are the #1 sufferer's of the Death Wobble.

I got a 94 F150 I obtained from my father not long ago and it's never in it's lifetime seen any suspension work lol. It's hitting the shop ASAP!!!

Aernt Jeeps the ultimate and notorious for doing the death wobble or is that just TV media nonsense?
@94XJ
10 жыл бұрын
TW Portre They are but again, there's less weight on the front axle making it easier for the vibrations to get going. Another thing going against the Jeeps is their off-road ability which requires a lot of maintenance that most people don't do. When the bushings in the track bar (a prime cause for this on stock vehicles) are very worn there's a lot of slop allowing the axle to wander and vibrate. The initial vibrations are usually an out of balance tire or a bad joint but without the suspension in proper working order to hold it at bay and going just the right speed (where the vibration is the same as the resonant frequency of the suspension) the vibrations become very large. I had it in my Jeep. It was fine for a while but after one offroading trip where I had a tire drop into a hole I didn't see and ultimately hit quite hard is when it started. For me it would be when the speedometer read just under 70 but would be fine if I could accelerate past that. If I hit a bump at that speed and unsettled the axle the vibrations would really take off much like they did in this truck. After replacing the front shock absorbers and track bar it (with a proper adjustable length one to accommodate the lift) was just fine. It's a solid axle problem so most trucks won't have an issue nowadays but yes, Jeeps will and are more prone because of less weight and their typical abuse...and cheap rubber bushings.

Ford bought one of my cars back and it was used. I had a vibration they couldn't find. They kept replacing parts. It was getting down to replacing the frame. I told them once every part was replaced and the problem wasn't solved, we would start over again and replace every part all over unless they wanted to buy the car back.

I saw a Ford today in oncoming traffic have a sudden episode of death wobble much like in this video. That was the first time I've ever noticed it in a vehicle in the oncoming lane. The driver had to slow down and recover before continuing. It's definitely a white knuckle experience.

This is a caster issue which is now easily fixed with the Cam Caster Adjusting Kit #1032100 from B.D.Diesel. This kit is for all 2005-2010 Ford F-series Super Duty pickup trucks. This kit must be installed by a professional shop as it must be welded on the radius control arms. This kit adds 3° positive caster which completely eliminates front end wobble. If you own one of these trucks, get this kit installed.

datsun_fan me To my knowledge, this is only an issue with four-wheel drive trucks caused by the caster angle of the steering axle. Two-wheel drive trucks have caster angle set by control arms, four-wheel drive steer axles do not have that. The axle caster angle has to be set. This is also the case with large trucks, semi-trucks, and buses. My semi-truck is 10° degree's positive angle on drivers side, and 12.5° degree's positive angle on passenger side which controls crown climb. To many of Ford four-wheel drive pickup trucks have less than 3° degree's positive caster which cause the steer wheels to oscillate or wobble side to side. This kit increases the positive angle to prevent this oscillation.

That happened to us on our 2005 f250. The problem was tires with very soft sidewalls. Inflating them to the max helped but what solved the problem was installing 10 ply sidewall overload tires. Their stiffness took the shaking away. It rides like a truck now.

It could possibly be it started after going over a bridge transition plate or rough patch that started a resonate movement between the contact surface of the tire & where it seals to the rim, at just the right speed. A physicist might be able to confirm & expand on this weird centrifugal oddity, but it makes sense to me that the sidewall flexibility at low pressure would make it vulnerable to this rhythmic motion starting in the first place. Good call on the deflection of the sidewall on the tire, esp. at lower pressure.

Have had several Fords with this problem. Had an F700 that was really bad, almost lost control a few times. Replaced the "king-pins"...but it still did it. Replaced the steering dampening shock, seemed to help, but still did it. Replaced the tie rods, knuckles, and shocks, then replaced the tires with new ones, and it finally quit doing it....$1200 dollars later! Go Ford!

I here to actually help. We had a fleet of about twenty F-350s that had this same problem. This was in the late 1990s. These trucks all had straight font axles or one piece 4x4 front housings. They were heavily loaded to their maximum GVW which did not help the situation. Usually the problem was the front panard bar bushings (one on each end of the bar) had play in them. It did not take very much play to set off the shaking. Its really violently, you'll think the front wheels are falling off and it can yank the steering wheel right out of your hands. Slowly bring it to a stop while keeping in the wheel pointed straight ahead. It won't stop shaking until bringing it to a complete stop. Before continuing make sure nothing is actually falling off! Someone might have tried to steal your front tires and the lug nuts are loose.You might drive the pickup for the next several months before the problem happens again. I could usually duplicate the drivers complaints by driving over some nearby railroad tracks. I had the luxury of being able to replace anything I wanted, cost was no object to keep the fleet safe. I would hate to be a mechanic out in the "real world". You can't drive the pickup for a month trying to recreate the problem. Even if you recreate it you still won't know what caused it. You would replace the most likely parts but you have no way of knowing if you fixed it or not . Most likely you will not be able to get it to shake again on command. It might come back again in a month and you'll like a bad mechanic. Start with the panard bar. The panard bar keeps the front axle or differential (4x4) from moving side to side You can purchase the bushings separately but you might need a hydraulic press to put them in. They are a really tight fit. We had such a problem with these trucks we always kept a rebuilt panard bar in stock. To check the bushings, with the wheels on the ground have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth with the engine running. If there is any movement in those bushings it is probably your problem. This does not always fix it. Sometimes the front tires also need to be balanced. If you hit a bump the out of balance tires and the play in the panard bushings sets up a wobble that will not stop until you bring the vehicle to a complete stop. Sometimes it also takes new shocks to prevent the wheels from hopping up and down. Then there are the front spring hanger bushings that can allow movement. For some reason we had F-350s with no prevision for a steering damper. Some with a steering damper and some with the mounting bracket but no steering damper installed from the factory. You can add one or replace your old one if its leaking. I had one truck that I replaced the panard bushings, aligned the frontend, balanced the tires, replaced the shocks, added a steering damper, replaced the front spring hangers. We were not allowed to replace tires until they were down to 2/32nds. Against the rules I finally mounted new front tires and that solved the problem. Even though they had balanced out okay they must have been out of round or had a strange wear pattern. Before you spend any money you could try rotating the tires. These frontends are so touchy everything must be perfect. It was only the Ford F-350 and F-450 we had this problem with. The Chevrolets and Dodges were okay.

About a year ago, I saw a Ford Truck experience this alongside my car while driving on a busy interstate and I never knew how to explain the anomaly. @@youngillinoisan4270 soooo your confusing the 5.4 and the 4.6. That being said, the 4.6 doesn't shoot plugs unless they are not torqued to spec. The 5.4 was notorious for breaking plugs durring tune ups. However, your assessment of the 5.4 AND 4.6 are completely wrong, as I have a 98 f150 with a 4.6 that has 392,000 miles on it that I take off roading, that outperforms almost every GM and Chrysler-Fiat vehicle i go with. I also have a 2007 f150 with the 5.4 3V just under 270,000 miles that drives like new without a single leak. I can put money on it that 9 out of 10 GM trucks on the road will develop an oil leak within 100,000 miles and need a major repair within 150,000 miles. How do I know? Rear main seal is a common fail point on the LS and LT engines in the GM line up. New active fuel management system has been known to cause thrown rods and dropped valves, and the warranty on the new trucks is only 50,000. Thats insane. Chrysler-fiat is worse with transmissions that are known to blow if driven at highway speeds for more than a few hours. Their active fuel management system is known as a fail point and causes hydro lock when the spark is pulled but its still injecting fuel into the cylinder, AND you have 16 plugs to replace on the Hemi with the 8 on the underside almost impossible to reach.

@kleetus92

Spalderdash Hugo I'll give you it might be a pain in the ass, but I'd rather change that than ball joints, or that damn mid driveshaft bearing. And I also agree about having to change a part that shouldn't be dead in the first place. I bitch and complain because I can't stand stupidity. I'm an electrical engineer for power conversion and motion control. My work ranges from 300HP water plants to 7000hp screw compressors at 7200V. I speak fluent sarcasm because it's a lot less costly than smacking some idiot dildo upside the head. Best part about it is most of the time the keyboard warriors don't even know they've been hit. The problem is most people see death wobble and can't distinguish between makes, models, or even suspension types that have nothing to even do with this. For instance there's some idiot on here claiming that their universal joints cause this problem. Physically fucking impossible. The are inboard of any suspension or steering component. If a U joint is bad, sure, it'll vibrate, but it sure as hell won't make your tires oscillate and make the front axle hop. That's the blatant stupidity that drives me up a wall. Yeah, sometimes I go heavy on the comments, but it's entertainment/relief for me. So for what it's worth, I'll recant my statement. But I will ask one thing, what does my choice of videos have to do with anything? Keep her shinny side up!

blue03r6 never had any problems with the steering shock on my '99 4.6 Expedition, but I absolutely 100% agree with you on the manifolds.
