Thanks guys, I saw the Colonel in the background while watching Manic Mechanic and I was hoping for a video. Also very glad to hear you're going to rebuild the 390. I am an FE guy with OCD and you were mentioning the cylinder heads. You picked up some C8AE-H heads when you were thinking the heads were bad. But you have C7AE-As currently on your 390. Between the 2 the C7s are a better choice. Especially if they have a thermactor those have 67-70cc combustion chambers verses 70-72cc chambers of the C8s. The exhaust port design is slightly better as well. I agonized over head choices when I built my 390 as all FE guys do. Would love another video when you decide to rebuild the 390.

I had the same problem with my 2001 Windstar. A 1/2" emissions hose from the intake manifold split, and it wouldn't start easily, and when it ran, it surged. I was able to bandaid it by wrapping the hose with tape. I happened to be at Costco getting gas when it died. The split wasn't visible from the top. I found it by squeezing the hoses.

Jeff! Cal! This vid is like dejavu all over again! Like you, I have 40+ years of wrenching experience on this truck platform. Here's the smoking gun I discovered on mine truck. The FE would develop a loose timing-chain and timing-gear wear as they were aluminum gears with plastic teeth caps which would begin to fail anywhere between 70-80k miles. This would happen back in the day before these trucks were even 10 years old. It happened to me four years back and that was the outcome of the tear-down I did with an original engine with less that 70k miles. Those soft gear components are the basis for other fail points in the engine's performance. Cam wear, low oil pressure, hard-startin' when warm, coughin' and stumblin' when trying to accelerate, these are all symptomatic of the weak timing gear set. Oh yeah, check your compression too, a bad timing set can create the conditions for fouling spark plugs and burnt valves which causes the engine to run rough at idle and makes you chase your tail trying get your spark and timing and points to do the job they can't do because the timing is all over the place, all the time. Your comment about saving up for a rebuild is the way to go...spend your money on "quality" timing gears, bearings and a good head rebuild and that engine will run like a sewing machine! Love your vids, I've done a bunch of work on my '69 F100 Ranger and used your tips n tricks to save me a mess of time. Peace!

Would love 390 rebuild series. I’m struggling right now with my truck. I’m burning oil like a mad man with a rebuild with only 8k miles. It’s my pride and joy and looks like I’ll be doing some rebuilding

HA! That's hilarious! Can't say I've ever ran into a run-ability issue like that caused by a leaky vacuum advance unit. Good find! Its nice when its an easy fix, once it's figured out!

390 P O W E R !!!! I'm surprised that was able to do a burnout, My 70 with the 390 never was able to do that, it was tired like the Colonels. I am going with plan C though, C is for Coyote! I agree though the Colonel will be fine living its life with the rebuilt FE, and your wallet will thank you too !

instead of a 390, how about an ecoboost swap? the i4 ecoboost would work, but the v6 models have the same or better power numbers than the 390fe. i believe the motor mounts line up, and the trans mount from the 10spd lines up with the crossmember if you move it to the correct position. I already replaced my 390FE once. if it ever goes out again i think an ecoboost swap will be cheaper than a rebuild. There's a guy on the ford-trucks forum that has done this swap a few times already.

For beginners.....can you explain how to know you are not running on all 8 cylinders? If someone doesn't know what to listen for, or look for, they can do more damage than good and just keep driving it not knowing there is a issue.
@joshuahabeger-jj9cp

The easiest way to know is, once the engine has warmed up spray each exhaust port with a little water. If 1 doesn't boil away instantly you have a dead cylinder.

Excessive overthinking... Probably 99%, a buck at same point of accelerator angle/load is lean fuel condition. Those of us who have swapped cams/injectors in the late '80s, early '90s EFI 5.0 Mustangs have seen it dozens of times. A weak cylinder is just that, weak cylinder. Probably not noticeable till compression is down to 60% of the others.
