Since I was born in 1951 I remember cars like the second generation Ford LTD. These are cars from a past era that will never be made again. At least there are some these cars as classic cars that have been restored. These were large full size cars, with a large V8 engine, body on a frame construction, and rear wheel drive with a solid axle. The result was luxurious car that had lots of interior room and also had a quiet smooth ride on the road and comfortable sofa type seats. These were land yacht cars.

This really takes me back. Back in the day, my family had the '69, '72 and '76 LTDs before buying the downsized '79, which still had lots of room but in a smaller package, along with the added benefit of better handling. Obviously we were definitely a Ford family! After the LTDs, my Dad switched it up, but still remained loyal to Ford, as he moved up to the Mercury Grand Marquis LS for the rest of his life. Me? Well...I'm still driving a Ford!

This generation of full sized Fords were among the highest quality cars built in the USA at the time. Superb body panel fit, extremely quiet and rattle free and wonderful ride qualities. I have a similar history! My grandmother with whom we lived bought a new '69 LTD 4 door hardtop with the Brougham option and 429. All the while, my uncle down the street was buying new Mercury Marquis Broughams and the Grand Marquis'. I really thought our loaded '75 Landau matched the Mercurys in luxury; in fact our car actually shared most of it's interior trim panels and materials with my uncle's Grand Marquis. Correction: both the 1973 and 1974 Galaxie/LTD/LTD Brougham had a pillared 4-Door Sedan (colonnade style without framed glass) AND a true Hardtop Sedan. The true hardtop sedan was much less popular, however. In the mildly restyled 1975 models, the true hardtop sedan was eliminated. Also, the 1974 models were slightly longer because the rear bumper was moved outward in order to comply with the new mandated 5 mph standard (the 1973's rear bumper was closer to the body because of its mandated 2 1/2 mph standard). The 1975 to 1978 LTD Landau had a truly elevated standard of luxury that the Caprice Classic could not match...with available leather upholstery and polished aluminum wheels.

We got to cruise around in a very cool dune buggy (knowing we were driving it just for fun as my dad already had a baja bug). The LTD was mainly my mom's car, and is large, safe and nice, so it we took it homer later that day. We kept it until we left California in mid-1978, driving a then-new Toyota Celica. My favorite year was 1977, most likely because that was the model year my parents owned. Though I do remember the car having a strange quirk from day one. The frames of GM fullsize cars used thinner walled steel starting in 1971 while Ford fullsize frames stayed pretty much the same through 78. This obviously affected ride quality so GM tweaked the suspension but the frames shortcomings still showed through. Chrysler torsion-aire gave a firmer ride but allowed you to corner quicker, Fords heavy frame and softer suspension gave a better straight line ride, and GM was somewhere in the middle.

@@manher4335 true, especially on those Lincolns. The difference i think is Lincolns were more heavy in the back than that of a Cadillac, Ford use the same thing as Lincolns * not so much today. The difference i noticed in Ford against Chevy or dodge at that time is Chevy made good motors but not the best, Dodge were never too good , maybe average, Ford had either a ok cheap motor or a tough motor. This what separate Ford from the rest, they cars could drag alone even if there's a problem that doesn't stop motor or transmission right away, You can do some wild work with Ford, they wasn't intended to look as good of other vehicles in it's class but something that every can afford and count on getting them from point A to point B and hopefully have enough money in years to come to purchase that brand new Lincoln Town Car. Ford had a vision, the rest was 🧢ing and pretending to sale their cars. Ford stayed true to the script of a American should be able to buy a ok vehicle without breaking their pockets. Now take a look in 2023, Chevy back lights similar to Ford. Dodge begin to step back in the game but they'll die down again about 4 years from now. Toyota back end kinda looking like Ford, everyone wants their truck/suv to look similar to Ford and Range Rover. Chevy Corvette, stolen pieces from Ford gt and McLaren, GMC is gasping for oxygen, they sold alot but that debt is ridiculous. This automobile industry is about to get interesting. I say these will be the big hitters in 2024 - Toyota, Ford, Tesla, BMW

They left out that you could get a 4-speed in 1969. The 69’s caprice and Grand Prix also offered a 4-speed.

The '78 Mercury Grand Marquis Brougham was for when you could afford a Lincoln but didn't want to be seen as puttin' on airs.

Those cars rode like a dream. It was like riding down the highway on your couch. They also were so quiet you could set next to a train crossing and barely hear the train at all. They just don’t make cars any where near as good now. Even the new Lincoln’s ride like crap in comparison. You need two things for a great ride long wheelbase and weight.

It's funny when you think about it back then, how it was such a big deal moving the key ignition switch from the dash to the steering wheel mount. On today's cars it's now back on the dash but there's no ignition key even necessary. However , I have to admit the craziest idea was putting the radio on the left side of the driver. It must've been designed by a left handed interior designer successfully slipping one by the Ford executives just for the fun of it. However, I do have to give him his props for trying.

My mom had a 2-door 1974 model when I was in my teens, during which I got a '71 Plymouth Fury myself. On quiet, still nights, one could hear hers rusting.

Are you sure it wasn't actually the sound of the Fury rusting, deflected off of the solid body of Mom's Ford?! 🤓
@Just1American1966

@@trudygreer2491 It was easy to visually verify which vehicle had rust and which did not. Strangely, the Plymouth didn't rust at all while we had both vehicles (early '80s.) Everything behind the Ford's C-pillar was nearly gone except the trunk lid.

@@trudygreer2491 I'm in Florida. Neither do we, but the salt air does lay claim to victims of its own. Maybe my mom's Ford had come from up North somewhere, but Fords here always had a rust reputation back then that wasn't shared by Chrysler products.

I have two LTD models a 1978 2 door pillard hard top and a 1977 2 door pillard hard top and I love it the 1977 was my grandmother car I learned to drive on it and drive it all through college. That car has been to Mexico Canada and to most of the lower 48 states. 20 years ago it was restored by Rusty's cars and cycles and still looks great.

I bought a 77 LTD in the late 80s for $35.. yes THirty five dollars. I drove it for about 6 months until the transmission failed. I then replaced it with an 82 Mercury Capri that I got for $50. yes fifty dollars. i drove that for about 9 months until it overheated and blew the head gasket. I junked it for $50 and got my money back. THose were the days when I had little money as a teenager but cars also were cheap and plentiful. I fixed things myself unless i found a good deal on another car.

Those prices that you are talking about for a used car sound like the early 1960's. Who sold a drivable car for only 35 dollars and 50 dollars in the late 1980's?

My favorite year was the 71 models. Of this series anyway, before that it was a '68 XL convertible. I currently own a 73 Country Squire, which weirdly does NOT have the woodgrain sides. It doesn't look like they were removed, it seems it just never had them, but is still a Country Squire. Go figure! It has the 400 engine and 3 speed automatic transmission. We're turning it into a sleeper! :-)
