Good tip James, crystal clear camera shots. On the fords I have seen most do not trip a code till the misfire counter gets higher than 14k. Mode 6 the way to go.

thanks for the specifics. i know ford dumbed the monitor down on the 3.0ls cause it would set misfire codes with crank fluctuations on road dips but i didnt know the spec...im kinda filming at an angle so i dont see myself in the reflection...ha

Great vid man. Mode 6 can be a real pain in the behind, but very handy when understood. I once had a ford truck with a single cylinder misfire code, so I checked the mode 6 test ID 53 just because I like to see it there as well, and I noticed that the cylinder next to it hadn't failed on the value scale, but was close, so I immediately went after an intake leak between those cylinders and found the problem within a few minutes. Keep the vids coming!

Hi James, A while back on one of your Videos you posted a link to a baro/elevation conversion chart. I believe it was on the shop glass where you work. I had it and misplaced it. Could you send me another or tell me what video that was in. Sorry I know this has nothing to do with this video..this is just one that I stopped looking on..Thanks

Just an FYI, Snap On now has Power balance so you can see live misfires, not as good as the IDS but still works well. and yes it will work on that old of a Ford, I have used it on older that 99 models.

right on. i think my old solus shows it as cylinder contribution test, i probably should have used that in video as well. appeciate all the feedback..thanks Mike

I was once told from another Tech that I worked with back in the day that there was a company that was selling a book and a cd-rom or dvd (can't remember) that had all kinds of manufacturer specific info on Mode 6 data and values and how to convert them to useful info..not just misfires but all systems monitored. I have not been able to find anything like this, but if anyone out there knows about this, I would love to hear it! I was told once at a trade show that if you had the right info and conversion factors for mode 6 data that a technician would be able to call failed parts before they failed. This was an Automotive Engineer that told me this…Anyone have any info on this?

I know for Ford OBD2 monitors you can get FREE information about them from the Motorcraft Technical Service information website in the OBD2 theory and operation section. It also includes the conversion formulas.

Thanks for the video James. I have benefited from it already. Had a Mitsubishi V6 engine with P0300 code, customer had not had a problem with vehicle until another shop had fitted a timing belt. Mitsubishi data on Modis didn't have cylinder misfire data available. Had a look at mode 6 on OBD data and found misfire fault data on cylinders 1, 3 and 5 only, cylinders 2,4 and 6 were 0 misfires. Owner was with me during diagnosis and was able to demonstrate misfire data to him as well as show him the timing marks didn't line up between crank and bank 1.

i remember. i think i may have mentioned mode 6 in our conversations, but it got me thinking and i was waiting for my next one so i could film it. also like Michael Berg said on my post, you can do the power balance or the cylinder contribution test as well and see the cylinder specific misfires live

it does help with those pesky Fords that don't like to set misfire codes. even though they are misfiring
