I have found over many years of professionally wrenching on cars, that these style of air boxes with the tabs on one side and retainer clips on the other side, a light coating of silicone on the air filter seal helps in putting things together easier ( be careful not to overdue it as too much if a good thing could he bad for the MAF). I am a GM owner and mechanic for almost 40 years and enjoy your videos as they are spot on for cause and effect of problems as well as repairs. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.

Don't use silicone on the intake system of your computer controlled vehicle. Even a small amount can create havoc with the o2 sensors and the catalytic converters. That pennies worth of silicone can cost you thousands in replacement of your exhaust system parts.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. This was the exact cause of my vehicle hesitation. The air box had broken clips on the MAF side allowing air to be sucked in creating the turbulence. Clamping this area down now has the engine running smooth at ideal and NO HESITATION ANYMORE on takeoff such as a red light. Thanks again. Great information...

Great tip. It's too easy to think you have a major problem, when it's a dirty mass airflow sensor, or the other simple things he pointed out in the video. As insurance, since you're already under the hood, check to be sure all the wires involved look good and that the sockets and pins on the connector to the throttle body are clean, and the connector is properly connected to the throttle body and locked in place.

This may be an older video but this made me fix my gas pedal flat spot . I did some valve repairs a few months ago and when putting my air filter housing on my 2008 Ford van didn't know that the map sensor sealing plug was pulled out allowing extra air into the air housing causing the engine to have a flat spot on acceleration. Reinserted the plug and it fixed it , runs great again.

I particularly like the fact that you not only know your stuff when it comes to vehicles, but you speak intelligently. First of all thank you! I have a 2005 Crown Vic Police Interceptor w/ p2106 code and wrench light (goes on when at 50mph) driving me bananas! It all started when my rear differential went while driving on the highway...the gears wouldn't go forward or backwards. Long story short brought it to the shop and changed the differential and still p2106. Then came back and changed the throttle body and air filter. Still no change. It's been 2 weeks, the mechanic looked at the wiring, changed the EGR, Intake Manifold(the coolant began to smoke prior), swapped transmissions (under warrantee), changed coils, spark plugs, swapped PCMs, changed the accelerator pedal/sensor, and checked the differential for speed sensors. NO CHANGE. He wants me to bring it to the shop to try and put a transmission speed sensor and then quote "he's done." I've done the relearn processes in your videos, checked for any air leaks from throttle tubes to air box and mass air flow sensor. I don't know what to do anymore. Any advice would help. Even if you're around the NY/NJ/Conn tri- state area I'll stop by you!

Was exactly the problem on my 2015 Ford Edge Sport 2.7L Twin Turbo. Had a hesitation on WOT after getting some AC work done at the stealership, couldn't figure it out. Tried a Throttle body relearn, nothing. Saw this video, checked the engine bay, found the problem. MAF Plug was unplugged. Plugged it back in, done. CEL went away, acceleration and throttle response went through the roof. Had no idea the MAF would affect just the throttle response from a dead stop. WOT under rolling conditions was fine.

Then i found the clip and fixed it, and that solved the issues. But that motor had a bad lifter, that got stuck open one day after sitting for a week, sounded like a rod nock when it started. always had a tick at cold startup but ford said they can't figure out which one it is and the warranty won't let them open it up without knowing which One it was..

Check the codes first. If you have vacuum at idle at the EGR valve, replace the TPS. It's raising the idle a little causing the EGR to open some thereby causing the EGR to get vacuum. You may not get TPS codes but that's the problem. If you get EGR pos. sensor codes, replace the TPS. if there's vacuum at the EGR.

I just got a '94 f150 5.0 flare side on the outside it looks awesome but it has some very weird problems normally I'm pretty good at figuring out what's wrong but this one has me stumped . The mass air flow sensor was broke when I first bought it when you would hook it up it would make it run very bad so I drove it without the mass air flow sensor hooked up but then today I finally got a new one and it made the check engine light go off but when it heats up it just turns off , when I first hooked up the mass air flow sensor the check engine light went off and I drove it around I thought it was fixed then after I let it sit there for a while it just shut off I was hoping it was going to fix the up and down idle it had but it didn't I think it might have something to do with my fuel filter I just really don't want to have to drop the tank. Somebody took out the back fuel tank on it and I was thinking that's why the fuel gauge did not work but I'm starting to think that it needs a new fuel pump and filter by the way it's just shutting off I've already dumped $500 into this damn thing trying to fix this and that and nothing is working That's my last thing I'm going to do if that don't fix it I'm done lol it's a nice truck ,I'm just over it though

Ford Ranger 2014 model 2.2l 4x2 (manual tranny, turbo). The problem is, when at 2nd gear or 3rd gear and accelerating from a running stage or climbing it's power is so weak, if rpm is below 1500 it doesn't have power on it, it just slowly picking up and picking up power even if it's already floored. It's so weak it feels like stalling if you have not enough propulsion goin up or if the car you are following suddenly drops speed then you have to change to the lower gears immediately or press clutch then rev it or else you will stall. But then, when rpm finally gets past 2k, it will suddenly picks up power like a a multiple vtec-like power just kicks in. The power delivery is not smooth. Slow acceleration then only picks up power at certain rpm. I replaced all filters already (Fuel filter, Engine Air intake filter) I also changed oil on engine, transmission and even the rear axles with all-AMSOIL fluids. I also asked a friend to clean the EGR. I also replaced the turbo hose in the top. I also added an TECHRON Diesel additive in my last fuel fill to clean injector and fuel lines. Yes I feel a little bit of improvement after all of these cleaning and stuff, but the uneven power delivery and poor low rpm power is still there, it's still bothering me. It's not like that before, I tried two trucks of the same model and specs from a group and they does not act like they were smooth and torqy. It's not normal. What should I check? Shall I clean the exhaust? Catalytic, does it have catalytic or something? At higher speeds no problem, it's a fast truck when it's already at speed. One thing I am noticing is when accelerating the sound also has a tractor-like sound effect if it's accelerating and the tractor sound effect goes away when it gets to speed already. But pressing gas and revving when parked does not create that sound. the sound only appears when accelerating.

I have a 99 expedition 4.6. It is throwing p0174 & p0171. Also ruff idle, bounces from 500-700 rpm while in gear at a stop. In park or neutral it bounces between 600-1000 rpm. Rough bucking acceleration. After it reaches operating temperature the it gets worse and tries to stall at every stop. I changed plugs and wires(OEM wires and platinum Bosch plugs) 8 months ago. In the last 2 months trying to fix the problem I have changed: ignition coil packs, pcv valve, idle air control valve, crankshaft & camshaft positioning sensor; also cleaned and or inspected: MAF, throttle body, egr valve, no vacuum leaks that I can find, fuel injectors and fuel pressure checked out OK, cleared adaptive memory and successfully checked for dent resistance for most of the truck... The passenger side fender well isn't very dent resistant... Lol. HELP

Jakon Staley Lean codes and large rolling idle are dead giveaways there is a major vac leak usually the pcv hose and elbows get soft and leak. Of course any vac line that got knocked off in all these repair would provide a similar leak and symptoms. On this engine I would go right for the pcv hose let the engine idle and feel along it for a vac leak and or significant idle change.

I changed the rubber boots for the pcv both the one that runs into the intake and the one that is on top of the valve cover that the pcv valve sits in. There is a huge difference in the performance of the expedition now. It idles fine now unless it is in gear then it still has a small roll in idle and on acceleration. I've inspected pcv hose. No cracks or breaks were visible. I will continue to search for vacuum leaks but I haven't found any yet. Thanks for your input I love the channel.

Hello FordTech Makuloco. I have a 2005 Ford Expedition, 5.4 L V8. The issue I'm having is that during acceleration, it surges! The RPMs will surge, until you reach about 60 mph. Then is evens out. The only way to combat this issue, is by taking the over drive off. As you would do, when climbing steep inclines. But, I know you don't want to do that all the time, as it burns more fuel. Now, the mass air flow sensor has been cleaned, as I've taken your advice, in a prior video. Also, the fuel rail pressure sensor, has been replaced. The fuel filter has been replaced as well. But it still surges, during acceleration, before reaching about 60 mph. Can you help me with this issue? Thank you.

i started with swapping out with cleaning the MAF, no change, then i tried another one, no change. We then tested the fuel pressure, stays at 4bar, tested the injector flow, no fault there. Changed the spark plugs and coil, no change. Car has no CEL or OBD fault codes, only thing we could find was when the car had a intermittent misfire between 1000-2000rpm in the intake the OBD scanner had a "lean condition" ... we still dont know what is wrong, car is down on power - also very strange is when the MAF is plugged out the car does not have this problem and then the car has a very loud intake sound like it has some K&N filter - yet the car is totally stock

Great video, I have an 01 lincoln town car that hesitates after its on the road at any speed. I've checked the air filter seating and everything is good. Only code I'm getting that cannot be cleared is P1633 low voltage. I wonder if that has something to do with it. Loved the praise and worship in the background, and thanks again!

I know this is an old video, but this still works. My explorer was sputtering when I give the gas, checked the air filter(it was filthy), cleaned it up a little and the sputter went away.

My mom has a 2010 focus, and I took it into for an oil change and they checked the air filter. Well they didn't put the tabs back on and it was driving and shifting erratically. When slowing down to a stop it would down shift into first and lock up the tires. It didn't hesitate at all but it really shifted hard. I'm assuming that it's because the PCM could not determine how much torque the engine was producing. The engine light did illuminate.

batchnerd Yes allot of driveability concerns can occur the focus seems to be especially susceptible to this concern I have fought a many customers in the past that have put on aftermarket air filters with problems.

My youngest daughter just recently moved to NC and her 2006 Ford Explorer is experiencing this same hesitation and unable to go past 40 mph. I live in Md. and wer'e planning on going down there in a couple of weeks. Fortunately she has one of my vehicles for the time being. When I get down there I hope this is the issue and I can implement this solution. Im not sure, however if an '06 has the same or similar air flow system. I'll find out soon enough!

I think what you should have said at the end is, the newer vehicles are absolute garbage (especially Fords) and you'd be far better off completely rebuilding a vehicle from the 1970s or earlier. You certainly gave me a lot more reasons to do just that.

great tip. i ran into this looking for Ign timing help. maybe you can help. 96 Gt 4.6 mustang runs smooth and peppy but with poor gas mileage. best ever highway was 20mph even. with Torque App i realized my timing never goes above 28 deg. should hit a number in the 40s and that will change mileage. also it shifts to firm while normal driving and that tells me Eng load to throttle is out of sync. Im 70 but not helpless with this stuff but if i was talking to another old guy like me Id say the Vacuum advance is disconnected but of course it doesn't have one so im trying to track down what has taken its place on the my cool /mustang. Thanks for your time. Ps. no codes. i cleaned the Air flow, new exh. , cold air intake, plugs and 0 change.

I want to say thanks for the spoken part more than the vid. You mentioned about the squish on the filter being off allowing air to leak past. I've replaced the m.a.s., egr, aic and checked for vac leaks and not much different. Then I noticed some warpage on one side of the lower airbox. Guess I'll go to my favorite yard and try replacing that.
