If the problem is air in the line from the reservoir to the slave cylinder this method works. My clutch was not engaging, pedal went to the floor. Went to autozone and bought the bleeder kit. Had to put a couple of wraps of electrical tape on the little nozzle for a good fit. Apply suction and release, repeat. After ~1 minute air was coming through the fluid. When all the air was out it became harder and harder to draw the fluid up the hose. I did not put fluid in the hose and try to back fill (?) as it seemed that as the reservoir was full it would do the same thing. You sir are a genius or had a stroke of genius and I thank you for taking the time to post.

I have been an automotive tech for 15 years. I have bled one of these master cylinders as described in the manual, by removing and holding at a better angle (nightmare pain in the a**) I mean look at some of the other videos!!!… "remove entire hose and master and reservoir, hang vertically etc.." SCREW ALL THAT:) Today, i tried your trick on a clients truck, however, i used a hand held vacuum pump with some clear tubing and the fitting that came with the pump (very similar) and IT WORKED!! I went from a half dead pedal to almost full pedal strength! i assume perhaps it works by creating a pressure differential, and pressures equalize by traveling from areas of high to low pressure. However it works, it does! super job dressedosprey!!! BEAUTIFUL:) Didn't shoot fluid back in, it gets sucked in from the reservoir after you press it a few times. THANKS!!!

After you vacuum the air out open the slave cylinder valve at the transmission and let some fluid out, keeping an eye on the reservoir to not let it run dry. Flow at least the amount of two reservoirs to run trough the system and this will give you a complete flush removing any water from the system due to condensation.

This method worked for me. I don't recommended sucking poisonous DOT3, unless you want a trip to the ER. I used vacuum pump of the type used to bleed brakes (ca. $20). I found that if you let the pump hold vacuum on the reservoir, it continues to suck out small air bubbles. It also seems to help if you tap the reservoir occasionally, knocking loose small bubbles. This method greatly improved the firmness of the clutch peddle, making it much easier to shift gears. Give it a try.

I had rough time getting my truck into gear sometimes. I saw the reservoir was empty so I filled it back up. Nothing changed. I did some research and came to the conclusion to start with bleeding the line before doing anything else. I thought I'd give this a try before taking things apart. THIS WORKED FOR ME!!! I didn't blow the fluid back in though. It really only took minutes. I didn't see large bubbles come up so I was surprised it worked. My 98 Mazda b4000 is shifting like new. I'm glad it was only air in the line other than having to replace the clutch or other parts. Literally cost me under 10 dollars and 10 mins to fix! I was skeptical this would work. Thanks brother, this worked for me! I took advice of a comment below and used a 10ml syringe. Just stuck the tip in the hole and drew the plunger back. Then pull the whole syringe out of the hole. Squirt fluid back in. Make sure to keep fluid level topped off. Knocked at the lines with the little brake fluid bottle to shake air bubbles loose. Repeated bunch of times. Drove. Rechecked levels. My Ranger was like an arm wrestling match to shift and grinding into reverse before I did this. You saved me hundreds, because I'm sure the mechanic would have found SOMETHING to replace had I taken my truck in. Shifting normal now. God Bless!

This really works!! To get a really firm clutch and full clutch disengagement I repeated the steps 3 time. But nonetheless, this is far easier than other solutions I've tried. The clutch would not release after the truck was warmed up; which means that the moisture was coming out of solution (as gas) as energy (heat and/or pressure) was put into the hydraulic fluid. I used a vacuum brake bleeder with clear plastic tubing; which lowered the pressure enough to get the water vapor to flash and come to the top. Once the fluid was visible in the tube and the vacuum was maintained, it started gassing off. It looked like a tube filled with club soda. I suspect the moisture was introduced into the system when my mechanic recently replaced the clutch, release/throw-out bearing and slave cylinder. He probably used an old opened can of DOT 3.

If you worry about getting fluid in your mouth, use the standard approach used in labs all over the world when drawing up liquid with a pipette. A little ball of cotton wool into the top of the tube. Allows air through easily but stops splashes and the liquid itself if it gets up that far.

I was so skeptical. I previously did the remove the whole system B.S. Then I tried the remove the snap ring and pull the plunger out. That worked, but getting the snap ring back in while the master cylinder is bolted in sucked. The first time I tried your method, I pulled all kinds of nasty fluid out, and of course air bubbles. Then I made the mistake of sucking all the fluid out by removing the fitting slowly. Next time I removed it faster and poured more fluid in while doing so. Clutch is working fine. Thank you for showing me this way.

Brilliant. Do this. Don't be too shy about swallowing brake fluid- the fluid will move slow enough that you can really control the flow. I was working on a 92 Ford Ranger and tried 17 thousand ways of bleeding it, this did it. There are many different kinds of hose+nipple arrangements you can use to make this work, look around and you might not even need to go to the store. I found that I got 1/2 pressure from just sucking bubbles from the top. I had to then release the bleed valve on the transmission for half a minute or so, then tighten that up, top off the cylinder and, voila!

It was impossible to shift into first with it running. I did this using a 10 ml syringe about 10 times (until I couldn’t see bubbles) and afterwards cracked open the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder (making sure to keep the reservoir full) until I drained about 3 reservoirs worth of fluid. Now the clutch works even better than when I bought it 7 years ago

@@tannerpendley5781 So you mean pull the syringe plunger and draw brake fluid up the hose until it fills the hose and just reaches the syringe starting to fill it. At this point the syringe has the plunger pulled most of the way up with air inside under vacuum and a little bit of brake fluid at the bottom and then you clamp the hose, remove the syringe from the hose, fill syringe with brake fluid so there’s no air in it and connect back to the hose, and then remove the clamp allowing brake fluid in the syringe and hose (with no air bubbles) to be sucked back down into the master cylinder?

MODIFIED METHOD - I loosened the clutch bleeder screw (on the bell housing, near where the clutch line goes into the bell housing), attached a 4-foot rubber hose (1/4") with a bit of tape at the end to get a good fit on the bleeder screw, took off the top of the fluid reservoir, and started to pump the clutch, much like you would do to bleed brakes. Of course, nothing happened and there was no bleeding into the bleed jar because of the air in the master cylinder, as discussed in many KZitem places. I then followed the part about blowing fluid into the master cylinder via the reservoir using the AutoZone part (W80625 - Brake Bleeder Kit) and the fluid started to appear in the bleed jar (the rubber hose goes into a jar with about 1" of brake fluid) and bubbles. This was old, black fluid so I did the blowing part about 12 times, until the fluid in the bleeder jar was running clear. Then with the clutch pedal down, I tighten the clutch bleeder screw and topped off the reservoir. I am convinced that this removed the air in the master cylinder and in the line itself. You might say my modified method doesn't suck.

I have a 94 Ranger. Check the fluid supply hose from reservoir to master cylinder, making sure there's no fluid/air leaks. I secured both ends with hose clamps to be safe. Mine was a rubber hose, yours might be plastic. Pre bleed the clutch slave with clutch pedal to pull any dirty fluid out of the system. Used a vacume pump and ran it up to 10 psi. Couple bubbles off the start, kept the pressured set, left it for 5 mins. Pulled the hose, maintained fluid level. Pumped the clutch pedal 10 times, inserted the hose and continued pulling at 10 psi for another 5 min. Had some micro bubbles and continued till I didn't see anymore. Removed hose, topped up the fluid. Clutch pedal was solid

My 2009 Ranger has a slightly different setup than yours. The master cylinder reservoir is on the other side of the fuse box and the bleeder kit tubing from AutoZone is too small for my hydraulic line at the reservoir. I still gave it a shot and tried to push it as tight as I could but wasn't sure it had a good seal. It might be my imagination but the pedal feels less mushy and now seems to have more consistency as far as resistance but I am still having issues with shifting into 1st and reverse at times. Oh well, I appreciate the idea. Seemed simple enough to try.

Did it too high of pressure! (25lbs) Sucked all fluid out and system sucked in more air... AAARRRGGGHHH!!! Start over, less vacuum... At this point, slave has no bubbles! Only master does! So vacuumed master to 10lbs 2 times. Replaced fluid as needed. Now have clutch pressure! Yeah!!! Checked slave bleed nipple for any bubbles. Good so far! Drove truck for awhile. Good! Great idea, clearly explained. I just changed the clutch fluid in my Ranger, had to create a vacuum on the slave valve to get the fluid draining. It was blocked by a couple clumps of white grease, and then it really started flowing. Got the slave valve closed but master quickly emptied so hoping not to have to use your method to remove any air that may have gotten in, but am prepared. Two quick notes to add -- better to use a 30-60 ml syringe to vacuum air out of and force brake fluid into master cylinder (cost < $1) and really good idea to wear gloves around any auto fluids (they're toxic).

I messed up my 1996 Ford Explorer clutch slave cylinder by doing this, it fid get all the air out, but the slave cylinder is toast. The reason was Ford trucks use concentric slave which when vacuum is applied will retract and comprise seal(because seal going over dirt and grime). The proper way for this truck is to disconnect the hydraulic line from the slave cylinder first and vacuum bleed(the hydraulic line has a schrader valve so you will still be able to remove air from the master cylinder).

Is there a section I'm missing..you suck up the fluid the first time, so it's in the tube, then you get the dot 3. What happened to the fluid in the tube? Do you blow it out, do you put it in a container, do you have to open up the master cylinder to replace fluid?? I really need this to work for me..and if it does..you will be a god to me!
@berettaboi
6 жыл бұрын
after you have pulled the possible air bubbles section out, then you just pull the tube out with the connector, and you can drain that right into the clutch reservoir, when the air will find it's way out of the fluid easily without the gravity and hydraulic pressure of all fluid above. by filling the tube back up with fresh fluid and forcing it directly down into the hose, that may just be enough to make sure there's little to no air bubbles left. that's the thinking behind it anyhow. i have to go try it right now... my clutch release system is currently not functioning at all... i had to start the truck in gear and clutchless shift to get home... makes for hairy situations when coming to stops, and starting again if there's any traffic, but i've been there before with other vehicles.

I parked my 2001 ranger on a very steep ( uphill ) incline. Since the clutch master cylinder is pointing uphill ( towards the firewall ) .........by parking the truck uphill, it levels the master cylinder so by pumping my clutch pedal 250 times ( just to be sure ) the air which was trapped in the upper part of cylinder can be released much easier.

Why not use an empty bottle, squeeze to evacuate the air from the bottle, press it into the oriface, release the compression on the bottle and let the bottle suck the fluid instead of your mouth. After that remove the nozzle from the oriface, evacuate the aerated fluid, draw up non-aerated fluid, re-insert the nozzle into the oriface, then squeeze the bottle again to force the fluid in. The goal here seems to be in the first half to decrease pressure allowing the bubbles to expand out of the tiny crevices, then in the second half to increase the hydraulic pressure around the bubbles which increases their effective boyancy and drives them up the line. Just a theory, not completely bullet proof, but hey if it works it works.

I'm confused a little bit on how exactly it's gonna be possible for it to work like it was shown in the video. I don't understand how I'll be able to suck the fluid/air bubbles from the master cylinder up through the reservoir and into the bleeder tube, without cracking open the slaves bleeder valve or something to allow me to suck the fluid up as shown in the video. I would think since it's an air tight system, once the bleeder hose is connected tightly into the bottom of the reservoir that I wouldn't be able to draw any fluid/air bubbles up by sucking on the hose... How is it that this works? I see the last comment on here was over 8 months ago, it would be awesome if someone replied and was able to help me out a little bit!! Thanks

How did this work out for you? Did this resolve the scenario? I know it's been a year, but I'm curious to know.

Sounds like you're making a sort "pseudo Power Bleeder". I'll have to try that. Thanks.

How exactly did you do it. I bench bleed the new clutch cylinder. I drained slave cylinder, pumped pedal and cracked open slave valve, even connected a vacuum to the tank and pulled some air. I couldn't blow any in the tank. Please help thank you.

Maybe block the vent on the lid and use it for the suction and forcing in the new fluid

While saving up to buy new master and slave clutch cylinders, this has kept my vehicle drivable. It took a lot of force to shift into 1st and reverse, and still a lot for the rest. Which would have at some point damaged the gears themselves

Oh yeah and the hand pumps can be had, from any parts house OR store ,...cheaply ....,so no sense in risking your health....unless of course that is your thing ...

What type of clutch fluid do you use ? I’m new with clutches and I just bought a 2003 ranger 5 speeds. Thank you, I’m about to try this method

Worked great, would reccomned, dont even have to open bleeder valve did it twice using the same setup and inbetween i just pumped the clutch, shuck the truck a little to try and wiggle out any bubbles, feels like a new clutch

So you pulled all the bubbles out first then filled the bleader hose with new fluid and blew that back through the line. How difficult was it to blow all the new fluid into the line? I have tried this but it's not working

Chris Anderson Just keep the reservoir full and as the bubbles come out gravity will lower the fluid back in its place .

not long, as i said in the video. it took me no longer than 5 to 10 minutes. there was some air pockets that were causing the issue. and this method worked for me.

+dressedosprey great idea man, was shy about useing my mouth tho and i thought about what you did and thought there has to be a better way to suck the fluid out and a turkey injector came to mind, prob because i deep fry turkeys and used turkey injector i had lying around, some will seat well inside reservoir just pull plunger back 80 percent then lift up an fluid in reservoir gets sucked in ahead of air, worked great for me thx to dressedosprey, hope my addendum does not offend you

+Thomas drain jr So you're saying you emptied the reservoir and then line by sucking with turkey injector or tube, then when you start getting fluid again you fill reservoir??
@billhowe2409
8 жыл бұрын
+Ben Gorbet fluid + air came out, with turkey injector almost full then lifted injector up from bottom of reservoir, fluid in reservoir rushes down the line in place of the air, make sure reservoir is full then pull plunger 3/4 of the way out then lift turkey injector up of thebottom so fluid on the outside can rush in, in place of air, but NOdo not empty reservoir or the line, keep it as full as possible

+Ben Gorbet and don't loosing the bleeder or you will get a lot more air in line, if you just installed a new slave cylinder, gravity bleedfluid into new slave cylinder then tighten up bleeder then do the following to get air out of master cylinder. I replaces clutch assembly after slave cylinder seal burst and lost most of my fluidand this was the only way for me to refill the hydraulic clutch line.
