When I was very young, all we had were drum brakes. We had to deal with this problem often. I was shown a trick that has served me well for decades. Before installing the new cables we would hang them up and drip motorcycle chain lube into them. Once it started to drip from the other end we knew they were totally lubricated. On occasion, we would even remove older cables that were still working and do that to them. After learning that trick I've never had a cable failure again, ever. The only thing that has changed is that today, I use a product called "CORROSION-X", instead of chain lube. In fact, I just used CORROSION-X to loosen up two seized cables on my Ranger. I have managed to get it well into the tubing and will not need to replace those particular cables for several more years, at least. For what it is worth...

Just what I was looking for really, had the gist of it but I always am thorough with my work plus havent had my ranger long and wanted to be sure nothing out of the ordinary would come up. Good video and to the point so I didn't have to sit for a friggin hour through a lot of talk etc, got a thumbs up. Thanks.

Please do not do what this guy did by blowing the brake dust out of drum.Breathing in the brake dust which contains asbestos is extremely dangerous for your health. Take the drum off carefully and soak everything with brake cleaner to minimize dust. Also the yellow spring should be on top of the green one the way it was when he first took the drum off.

Didn't think I'd have to explain to people not to breath in dust. I was in a well ventilated area and wore a 3m 6502 respirator with approved filters for asebestos. Brake clean isn't too healthy either.

@@onyxpartitian Glad to hear that, but you also shouldn't get it on your clothes or any where on your body where you might breathe it in later when you have your mask off.I believe in the next year the government is not going to allow brake pads with asbestos into the country. So that would be good for everyone.

@@onyxpartitian While I agree that you probably SHOULDN'T have to caution people, brake lining dust is extremely toxic, not just inhaled, but also on your skin. This is a GREAT tutorial, and particularly helpful for me, and my only suggestion would be a short disclaimer before or after the video about proper procedure/safety/ppe.

I started off putting on new cables on my 7.5 then seen a busted leaf on these cheap 2 leaf springs so I bought a heavy duty 6 leaf springs and said hell while I'm this far I went to the junk yard and got a 8.8 posi rear end and stripped it down to nothing and sand blasted it with new paint and got a all USA made rebuild kit and all new gears and clutches and kicked this 3.73 across the pavement and stuck a 5.13 in and got a 6 inch lift and new 15x10 Corvette rally rims and 35 inch tires then did the front with all new front end moog parts with 2 inch lift springs and and 4 inch lift spindles and taking the bed off to derust it all for a new camo paint job , yep one thing leads to another.

Never use compressed air to clean brakes. You're putting cancer dust in the air. Brake cleaner makes it unable to be breathed in and can be collected in a drain pan of some sort (turkey pan for like $3 at Walmart). Save yourself the cancer and be safe

Sadly this video did a very poor job of showing how to fix the e-parking cable replacement from the foot pedal in the vehicle all the way back to the wheel and how to make the proper adjustments to get the cable set at the right length so the cable is taught but not activating the e-parking brake until pressure is applied to the foot pedal in the cab and so that it will fully release when the release handle in the cab is pulled, thereby compressing the e-parking brake shoes and pads so that it doesn't bind with drum brake housing or the disc brake rotors. The camera work has to show each step of the process for removing the cable and replacing it so the viewer can see exactly what the mechanic is doing. Shots of the mechanics back blocking one angle and failing to show the insertion of the cable from the backside of the drum housing into the e-parking brake opening and it's attachment in the e-parking brake housing is needed. From this video the viewer doesn't have a clue what is going on. This video gets a D- and the comment about blowing the brake dust off the e-brake housing is right on. That dust is lethal to breath in. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
