I have a 2019 F250 super duty started the death wobble at 5k miles. Brought to the dealership and they replaced the steering stabilizer with a heavier duty one from ford and have yet to experience it again and it has noticeably less feedback in the steering wheel when hitting bumps. People call it a "Band-Aid" but if the truck came stock with it there would be no death wobble discussion so its a fix to me.

Adding the caster will prevent the oscillations.

There’s a TSB for this concern that instructs us, the technicians, to replace the steering dampener. I believe Ford is on their 3rd revision of the dampener since they acknowledged it as a issue and it finally seems to have suppressed the wobble. Dampeners have been on backorder for months while the new supplier, Hitachi, has been building up enough stock to release them. They tried to play it off as a caster issue. However, it’s just poor quality parts and it’s not just the dampener. I hate to break it to everyone, but solid front axles with coil springs are known for this. It’s not just a Ford problem.

Have you by chance had any 2020s come in the shop with this problem already? I'm hoping Ford figured it out before they built mine...but that could just be wishful thinking considering the problem seems to have been around for several years. Also, by chance do you see more diesels than gas come in with this problem? Seems to me the heavier weight of the diesel would wear out those front end parts more quickly.

We've gone to ford and all they do is replace the stabilizer shock with the same exact part... Bandaids and shoestrings. Now we are riding in dodge turds. I like dodge but it's a significant downgrade. It rides like a brick and the turbo lag is insanely bad. Like really really bad. I almost want to run a compressor to it lol. The 6.7 is pretty laggy but not nearly as bad as the 6bt. It's just a shame because we like the ford trucks more.

@@parametalhead your are correct the IFS front end on the bow ties do have a softer ride, but I was not bitching about ride quality.....my beef with Ford and my 06 Superduty specifically was the fact I could not get away from it violently wobbling when I would hit a bump and it was bone stock, did not touch the factory components. I replaced just about every component in the front end with OEM parts and finally just gave up and dealt with it. It's unnerving when it happens and feels as though you have no steering control, seriously it's violent as in your looking around waiting to see parts flying off the truck and waiting for dashboard to come crashing down. I looked at getting a 2016 F350, but they have the same issue, looked at the new body styles and seems they have the same issue.....I was unable to determine the frequency this happens with the newer ford's in comparison to other brands with a solid front axle.. As it seems to be a problem across the board with all manufacturers of straight axeled front ends......however this wobble issue from my own research seemed to be more prevalent in the Ford Superduty line up. I did purchase a RAM and so far so good, I have had zero issues with it, and yes the RAMS have had reported instances on new trucks having death wobble. However,, the frequency at which it occurred amongst RAM 2500/3500 owners was far less in comparison to Ford Superduty owners. Again this my conclusion from my own research compiled from owner reviews, consumer reports and anything else I could get my hands on that was reputable.

That steering stabilizer is one concern yes. Also, the smaller sized ball joints/tie rod ends on all of the steering rods need upgraded to heavier duty versions. Lastly, the caster on those Fords for years has been too minimal and will require a 1 degree caster kit to allow for the caster rate to help prevent the shimmy. Fords just don't have enough caster and just that change itself will take out the "lazy" steering return rate when turning 90 degrees assisting the wheels straighten out with a more positive rate. While driving straight, this added caster also forces the front wheels to hold themselves true by the weight of the vehicle vs. the steering system. Apparently Ford has decided the 4x4 Trucks they sell need to have a steering system like any commercial airliner, a "tiller" system with zero caster.

2019 F-250 Lariat. Same problem at higher speed pothole confrontations. Ford now sending letters offering replacing the stock dampener at no cost. My dealership expects parts to be here in a week. We'll see if it fixes problem after they install. In response to some of the comments: I've owned every brand out there and it comes down to cost reduction. In order to reduce cost, manufacturers have to cut somewhere. In America the first thing to go is the people on the floor as it's the easiest to implement. They will cut manpower until it affects the bottom line whether that is through injuries, absenteeism, people going to work elsewhere, etc. When that is at it's bare bones level they have to move to the materials they work with to build the vehicles as well as where its sourced from. When those cheaper materials cause a large enough public backlash and affect their profit, they will upgrade the material JUST enough to hopefully fix that particular problem. The steering stabilizer is a great example. Another perfect example is the introduction of the now plastic gas tank cover door. Why in the world would they do this? Because after substituting millions of plastic doors for the more expensive metal ones all across their model lines, Ford saves literally hundreds of thousands of dollars over time. The drawback is that somewhere in engineering they did not anticipate those thin plastic doors warping like a banana in its first year off the lot. American companies want to be first and have Americans honor their brands as opposed to brands made overseas (I do too) but there is too much profit to be made if they can pull off these downgrades. Capitalism at it's finest.

This shit fixed my 2019. It started a wobble before the first damn oil change when I got it new. This fixed it. Now I have almost 60K on it and still no wobble. And that is the only thing I changed. Then low and behold. Nit to long ago they did a recall. I do not want them to touch my steering at all. So I'm not going to take it in for that.

I'd still buy one of those over a Chevy anyday. I drive those damn Chevys at work and they have all sorts of gremlins. Oil press. gauge goes irratic. Goes into limp mode for no reason. Motor shuts off. Chevy got problems. There's a reason Ford is #1 in sales of Trucks. Dodge - don't get me started on that POS. They have consumer reports' most complaints on a $60k truck!

You're confusing engineers with bean counters. Engineers told Ford the DCT was prone to failure early on but it was bean counters aka accountants that forced it forward because dollars. It's the same with the stabilizer. Engineers can tell them all day long that it's inadequate but they don't have final say.

@breinerruiz4621

@itsme78932

Going to Ford is definitely not the fix for this. The fix is a proper steering stabilizer, inspecting the front end to make sure all the joints are tight, proper tires/alignment, and making sure your caster is good. Alot of these trucks come with nearly zero caster angle, which really doesnt help when it comes to death wobble. The upside is a lighter steering but it can be much twitchier at speeds. The fix is to add some aftermarket caster bushings, to fix that issue. Add bushings, a proper steering stabilizer and a good set of tires/alignment, you will be golden and never have death wobble.

That looks like the same stabilizer I've seen on F-150's. They have a maximum curb weight of 5,700 pounds. Super Duties have a maximum of 7,700. That's crazy that they expect the same components to hold up to having to redirect literally a ton more weight.

Looks like Ford undersized the steering damper to make the truck easier to steer...and created a death wobble situation. AMC made the same mistake back in the 1970's with the CJ-7 but you only saw this problem if someone put much larger tires or aftermarket "deep dish" rims on. A truck with tires and rims from the dealership doing this is unaceptable. That the aftermarket has a repair available before Ford is inexcusable.

Personally the culprit is trac bar. Whether it needs to be check with torque specs on the bolts or bad bushing. Steering stabilizer is just a band aid and eventually the wobble will be back.

This truck went to the dealership twice and had all bolts and bushings on the track bar checked and re-torqued. This steering stabilizer fixed every bit of death wobble on this truck after getting the run around for a while from the dealership.
