Thing is its also the most popular van in the UK. Ive had 3 of them no issues bar a battery replacement on one as the stop/start is a battery killer after a few years. Theres a lot more of them knocking about, bound to be more horror storys. Disclaimer: this is not a endorsement of ford quality 😂

It's all down to Servicing on Time, Look after the Van and it will look after you, The main problem with any van is people do not spend a Penny on servicing unless it goes wrong, then they wonder why!

Ford recommends replacing the wet belt at 50k to 140 k miles
@Fikozmeilord
10 ай бұрын
Here in Germany they recommend 240 000km, in our company we have around 50 vehicles with this engine, we had 3 vehicles with snapped timing belt at around 100 000 km. That's why I started to replace every belt after the vehicle goes out of warranty. Here in Germany new long block cost around 10 000 euro...😢

I had the wet belt on this engine snap on me at 86,000 miles. He probably doesn’t even know it has a wet belt. It’s absolutely essential to clear all of the deteriorated belt particles out of the oil pick up very common that they block up. When this happens knocks out the big hand and main bearings.

Been very lucky. Our fleet of 1.6 biturbo 120s were garage queens. Of the 12 we had at least 2 are in the garage all the time. All we do is motorway miles, vehicles are all telematic'd up so if you boot it fleet manager canes you and we don't carry heavy loads. Worked out that the main dealer "servicing" killed them, since their servicing is open the bonnet to look at the block, then see what the OBD reader says. Since we went to backstreet/small garage that actually serviced them and lost a kidney when we saw what was broken from years of neglect, they ran alright till we binned them off for customs.

100% gen 2 vivaro were terrible. 16 plate I had, recall after 2 months for incorrectly fitted sump, had 3 clutch master cylinders in a year, 2 coolant return hoses that rub against intercooler and split, 2 EGR valves, turbo bypass flap that snapped off and got stuck just before being sucked into actual turbo, then after 172k miles the timing chain snapped. Excellent vans...

Our transit custom has been trouble free from new exception of injectors. One day wouldn't rev above 1.6k RPM firing on 3 cyls. Turns out Ford admitted a faulty batch of injectors for the 2.0D ecoblue and will replace under recall via the AA BUT.. it doesnt appear on the DVSA safety recalls list because it's not seatbelt or airbag related etc. Wet belts are a problem. Most specialists will recommend changing at 50-60k. Oh and if you don't use genuine Ford oil, a snapped belt won't be covered under warranty, as Ford claim their oil has an additive.

Don't be afraid to change the oil & filter, on any engine, BEFORE the recommended period. It's the key to longevity. Also, all engine componants have a finite life cycle. Parts are gonna start wearing out after 60k plus miles, even in a pampered, regularly serviced engine. It's unfair to condemn a vehicle because you had to spend money on it after it's circled the globe 3 times.

It very much depends on the engine temps the motor gets to as the hot oil makes the belt degrade much faster. Long journeys high speed etc causes the rot and by the time it shows any sign it's to late as damage has been done. In your particular scenario I would guess most of your travel and mileage consists of runs taking less then 1 hour with at least that inbetween to cool down. Oil has an affect and the particular type can influence the degradation but the enemy is heat for extended periods. So this is an unusual problem that presents at the opposite of normal engine durability expectations. Hence particular users getting far less out of these belts than others. Im no mechanic but have an industrial background in machine tools and have faced similar problems. Oil cooling and an increased capacity made a huge difference to the extent that the wet belts when changed had no indication of degradation only wear.

My 2016 2.2 split a piston at 70k. No prior warning lights, no reduced performance, nothing. Just started shuddering one day while driving on the motorway. Replaced the engine. Mechanic said it was either back pressure from a stuffed DPF or a faulty injector, but no prior warning lights!!! I got the injectors tested and they were fine. Ended up drilling out the DPF and remapping it out, so as to avoid the problem again.
