Hi everyone! Just so you are aware, I know that Culiacan is NOT considered to be the 'most dangerous city' in Mexico by homicide statistics - it's purely that it is a common Google and KZitem search term and that's how KZitem titles, keywords and search engine optimisation work if I want the video to be recommended to viewers. Note that this is a VERY POSITIVE video about the city! *Have you been to Culiacan?* You can check out the following if you like! - My website - www.thetaoofdavid.com/ Music used in videos - www.thetaoofdavid.com/youtube-music Merch site - www.thetaoofdavid.com/the-tao-of-david-shop Book English lesson - www.thetaoofdavid.com/book-english-lesson ¡Hola a todos! * ¿Has estado en Culiacán? *

From the cathedral to the Malverde shrine, from Tostilocos to ice cream, to families playing at the plaza next to signs of missing people, Culiacán as Mexico is a bizarre mix of realities: it isn’t unsafe, nor it is safe… it is just real. I might be wrong but one thing I love about Mexico is that we don’t pretend to be what we are not, we don’t hide it… if people are interested to see the real side of Mexico, they will. We have pretty places and run down places, and the look of them has no connection with good or bad people. And I just love that judging others isn’t as easy here as anywhere else. You got to know a place, you got to know the people to know… and you David prove that over and over with your videos. Thanks hun. I hope you feel better.

I´m glad to hear that you enjoyed your time in Culiacán. It´s a bit of a shame that you visited the city just after one of the worst droughts in many years ended, since lots of the green that characterizes the city was lost. The big and nice rivers were almost dry (Thats why the boats were abandoned) and most of the pretty parks and gardens turned into mud and dirt. But anyhow, I am very excited to see the next part of this series, specially about the food in Culiacán. I´m happy to see a foreigner visiting the city, as you said, Culiacán is not a popular tourist destination at all, and it´s always refreshing to see and listen to someone else´s perspective about it. Greetings!

David, you can feel indirectly the the Cartel presence in Culiacan with the disappeared lists on that wall. The Malverde experience is strange, out of the ordinary for sure, some people seemed to have faith in this cult and it is hard to judge. But as you pointed out, there are plenty of things in Culiacan one can enjoy. One could almost say that Culiacan is in a class of its own.

If you are referring to the tablas saying something like "Gracias por Favores Recibidos", it means that somebody prayed to Jesus Malverde for something, received it, and credits Malverde for the favor granted. There is a tradition of tablas for officially recognized Catholic saints, the Virgin Mary and Christ when they are credited with a favor received. Santa Muerte is also prayed to, usually for the ordinary things, but sometimes for things that the worshipper does not feel comfortable requesting of the traditional Catholic saints or from the Trinity.

I don't know if you got it wrong or not, but Malverde wasn't originally associated with drug cartels, he was a bandit, yes, but he worked alone and did give to the poor. When he died he became this figure a lot of locals (regular people not involved in crime at all) looked to in hard times, most old people asked for or know someone who asked for favors to Malverde and can tell you of his miracles, they really believe in him like other catholics believe in la Virgen. Years later drug traffickers and other criminals also turned to Jesus Malverde as a "Santo patrón", and yes, that might be bizarre, but the latter I don't think so (yes, I'm a local so I'm biased hehe). Just wanted to clear that out, overall your take as a foreigner was really nice. Qué bueno que te gustó Culiacán! Ojalá regreses :)

I know you're not a Believer, but I think you were in God's hands the whole time. Held my breath the entire video knowing you survived long enough to post it, but I just hope you don't stay there too long and "get the f---" out of one of our most criminally-infested cities. Please don't take this the wrong way, but you're a very important ambassador for Mexico and some places simply have done little to nothing to EARN your trust and your tourist revenue. I also know this goes without saying because you're wise enough and you have enough experience, common sense, and good travel instincts to know that YOU are probably not a target, but PLEASE take extra care of yourself when you venture into places like this. As you've also seen in Tepito (CDMX), these people "pray to the Holy Death" (Santa Muerte), or GRIM REAPER for "favors & miracles." (You just won't see, often until it's too late, when you are UNKNOWINGLY wandering into areas where witnesses of ANY suspicious activity are not wanted!)

Culiacan is very safe. My family has lived there all there lives. They are all teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers , entrepauneurs, etc....They all have good lives and are very happy. People here, are very friendly, family oriented, hospitable and giving. The nar.... mind their own business. As a matter of fact, they are gone from Sinaloa and operate in other states. It is like any other place, mind your own business and that's it.

The local peasantry finds drug trafficking and violence to be glamorous. This is true in most of Latin America (where I live). It is especially true of Sinaloa. They believe gore is sophistication. But believe it is Mayberry if you have the need.

You knocked this one out of the park David. I will admit I was disturbed by the orange posters, they were very unsettling. The shrine was mind blowing! As a full on atheist, I can’t wrap my head around this type of human behaviour. 👏🏻 great job! Cant wait for the next video. Thank you for all your efforts in bringing such quality content

You know what I love about you? You go and show people that Mexico is not the shitty, cartel filled shit hole that people think it is. I love Mexico and have learned if you pay attention to the shit, that all you will see. If you look at the nice places, you will have a great time. 💕 plus lots more Mixis there than in other places.

Hello, I'm very happy that you are sharing Mexico with the world, it brings absolute greatness that someone from Europe who spends time in Mexico is not criticizing the life of Mexico's beauty nor darkness. Mexico as always been a country with open arms but remember that's not a weakness, its respect and a loving country. Yes Mexico is very dangerous, but the world is more dangerous, you just have to keep yourself in line and be careful what you say and do.
