He wasn't super cocky though. The most "cocky" thing he said was that people who complain about coal usually don't know how to use it properly, which even if it is ironic that he burned through his blade, it's also true that he still didn't complain because he knows how to use it and knew the error he made.

As soon as Todd started bragging about using coal and going on about how people who didn't use it "didn't know what they were doing," I knew he was going to lose. And sure enough, he burns through the bottom of his blade because coal makes it hard to see how hot that section of blade was getting. The truly great feel no need to put others down to prove their skill.

The weapon was still very used during the age of gunpowder. The advent of smokeless powder however did make the cavalry sabre obsolete

Id argue it was more so cartridges and “repeating” designs that really did it in, then tbh WW1 really was the last nail in the coffin as even in hand to hand combat they were too large to be effective in the trenches.

Wait.....I've never realized this. Why did he wield a cavalry saber in Master & Commander? He was a sea captain. A sailor. What advantage would such weapon have while fighting on the ship?

And I'm pretty sure the regulations had men equipped with cutlassess since 1804. I want to say the Ottoman sailors used shorter versions of the saber in the navy; pictures show Oruc Reis and Barbarossa with pretty short curved blades pretty much identical to the classic cutlass (which came from European hunting knives) . The key point of boarding combat was to fight at close quarters, hence the use of musketoons, pistols and blunderbuss.

British Naval Officers of this period used blades similar to those depicted in this episode as did many infantry officers as it became increasingly fashionable circa 1800.

Todd came across as arrogant, Dave came across as amateurish. Despite both these things, I think they both made good blades. I'm no bladesmith but I'd assume smithing with coal is a bit harder than with a gas-powered forge, so good on him for that. Overall, congrats to both.
