Its funny how people are saying the tests are dumb.. They are literally trying to break the weapons fools, they're trying to find which one is strongest, especially with the strength test.

I love the tests, but the ice block is stupid. Use helmets, bamboo bundles, shields, even big hardwood stumps, a huge block of ice is about the same as iron or granite and proves nothing, people can (and do) lose due to nothing but sheer bad luck.
@whensomethingcriesagain
2 жыл бұрын
That's the issue though, when you put weapons in strength tests so far above and beyond the use they're meant for, it ends up unduly rewarding ones that may be worse overall but better stand up to the absurd test. Eg, you could just deliver a glorified chopper and win if it survives whatever ridiculous test like hitting a giant lug nut with a hammer (a test I've actually seen them do) while the other doesn't even if said other is better in every other way. They should be tested for how well they hold up to their intended use, not the insane abuse tests
@swxqt6826

@@whensomethingcriesagain people who regularly make weapons do test their blades by cutting through 2x4s multiple times and try shaving afterwards, even though the weapon itself only needs to sustain a one tenth of the force they’re applying to it.
@whensomethingcriesagain
2 жыл бұрын
@@swxqt6826 That's fine to do on its own, presumably they're still prioritizing making it in the shape and role it needs to be, the problem comes with how this competition is judged, the amount of weight given to these durability tests that are way beyond the expected use of the weapon becomes a serious problem when it unduly rewards just making what amounts to a crowbar with an edge

Another slight gripe: A colichemarde is a type of small-sword. Most small-swords were really only thrusting blades. So it's a bit misleading (although more visually exciting) to cut with & colichemarde. I also don't think anyone should be penalized for not sharpening a colichemarde on the show.

he lost anyway cause his sword bent. but i disagree, it is still a sword and would still require to be sharp to some degree, even if its main purpose is to stab (we clearly see from the footage that it had trouble perforating the skin too, and doug showed that it wasnt sharp at all arround the tip)
@ishaaqmartin3564
2 жыл бұрын
If it was a strict duelling colichmarde, yes. But as a wartime colichmarde, it's should fully be able to slash. Chopping is what the blade is not designed for, which is why he did tip cuts on the cherry wood and Doug did the same with the sandbags.

The bayonet knife is my favorite. When I was little, I really like gunblades: half-gun, half-blade. Bayonet guns may not be a gunblade, but I like how it works: from a pointy gun to a normal safety-issue knife. You don't usually see them these days, since they're a separate weapon now. Still, I like it. I love it. Hopefully, one day, "it will kill" again.

Washington was fairly typical of officers- the smallsword (Colichemarde in this case) would be worn as part of dress. It was proper for civilian life. The hangar or saber (Cuttoe in this case) would be worn on the field. Of course there was a lot of overlap. I'm unaware of any times Washington actually struck someone with his sword (perhaps at his first battle, the killing of Sieur de Jumonville), but the sword was usually used in the colonies for signalling as the halberd and partisan were often cumbersome when moving through thick brush and marching over long distances.
@Tareltonlives
Жыл бұрын
The inability to cut with a small sword is fairly typical. However, if that sword bends that easily, then it's not safe taking into the field or in a duel. Smallswords weren't always carried on the field, but you never know when you might need it.

Depends on the sword. Some you really want a lot of flex in, other types need to be sturdier. You wouldn't do it with a medieval arming sword, but anything with a long, thin blade needs to bend safely, because if you hit bone or armor, that thing's gonna bend.

As they entered his room, he shot two with a pistol in each hand, then drew and threw his knife, killing another before the rest planted their bayonets in his chest.
