At first, it was boring, but you turned me around; it's groovy, now.

What's your typical tolerances held on parts you make on a VTL?
@jamespark_85machiningtv

Very precise products require precision from +0 to +0.03mm and general tolerance is 0.1mm. 😀

I worked most of career at a heat exchanger manufacturer and I must have purchased over 1000 forging to be machined into nozzles. The best were made using. Forged ring roller that provided near net shapes I was director of materials

James, You used a DTI to centre the bored hole but when you took the first (facing) cut the bore was way off centre... did you decide to use the outer perimeter instead as the centreing reference ? 🤔
@purerhodium
Жыл бұрын
Looks like it. Whoever bored that hole must've bored it so far off centre that there wasn't enough material left on one side lol
@jamespark_85machiningtv
Жыл бұрын
The product was not well centered. So I changed the processing plan. As you know, the hole in the center is a hole for entering the boring tool.😀

When first mounted you used a DI to indicate the pre prepared bore. But when you started machining the bore was way off centered. Mistake or did you just decide you could do better for the outside by eye? The DI step seems, to me, superfluous. The result looks to be ok. Be nice to see it as a completed item and a reason for it to have to be forged. Maybe where it's used would complete the journey from, as a previous commenter said, boreing to groovy baby.

Is it a requirement that stock has a central bore for chip evacuation? Or is that done simply to avoid throwing coolant everywhere?
@jamespark_85machiningtv
Жыл бұрын
The middle hole was drilled to enter the boring tool during inner machining. The reason why the hole is pre-processed is to shorten the processing time by working on another machine.😀
