@@realbigtuna667The real reason the OEMs use cast pistons (apart from cost, which is 100% the main reason) is that forged pistons require slightly more piston>bore clearance due to them expanding a bit more than cast. This means more blow up while the engine warms up and increased emissions, which they can't get away with anymore.

@Mak13927

This is an impact test. Correct me if I'm wrong but when casting a metal it becomes harder during recrystallisation, so it will be able to withstand more energy from impact, however due to the lack of tensile strength of the casted metal (won't bend as freely) it simply shatters. You see this quite a bit in cast iron, negating the additional carbon content. Sorry if that is incorrect, in any case check out alloys and phase diagrams (:

I’m an engine builder too so I totally get what you are demonstrating 👍🏻 but you kinda hooked that cast piston right on the edge above its weakest spot-the ring land and then went straight down on the forged piston. Just saying! But yes, the cast piston doesn’t stand a chance against detonation versus the forged piston! 👍🏻

Now do a semi-solid cast piston. The only ones that exist are marketed as "semi-forged" and they're an OEM upgrade for the 4AGE from Toyota. They're rated for 600hp in that engine. Semi-solid casting is a process where hypereutectic aluminum is heated up until it has a paste-like consistency and then I believe it is high-pressure squeezed into a mold or drop forged or something like that. The end result is a hypereutectic cast piston with an aligned grain structure, giving it the beneficial properties of forging (to a slightly lesser extent) as well as the beneficial properties of a cast piston (no piston slap, no or low blowby, not "warmup" period before safely romping).
@motoiq
11 ай бұрын
Who makes those? I have only heard of wheels made that way. 4032 alloy pistons are something similar.
@Drunken_Hamster
11 ай бұрын
@@motoiq I literally said so in the comment. It's a set of factory-available pistons from Toyota for the 4AGE. They're 81mm in bore. They're marketed as "semi-forged" but the actual process is called "semi-solid cast." The ones from Toyota the only ones I know of. I wish the aftermarket had more of them for popular engines at a few different compression ratios. Also for the wheels, I think you're thinking of rotary forged, which is a different process altogether.
@motoiq
11 ай бұрын
It's because they probably don't exist and someone said that on the internet.
@collinpietsch5614
8 ай бұрын
No they do exist The issue is that the equipment used to make it is quite expensive to maintain and let alone use. Toyota's the only manufacturer that offers them factory as an upgrade. During the process they were squeezed into a mold under high pressure like he said when they're turned into a paste like consistency. Giving very similar strength to a forged piston while giving you all the benefits of a hypertect it piston. But forged is stronger and can handle way higher temps.

Nice demonstration of material integrity and strenght but not really a good example if you want to go more in depth since the force from a detonation builds up gradually (explosion and expansion) and not instantly (dropping a hammer onto the solid surface). Noto to mention that the whole energy will spread across the whole surface and not just hit some part of some edge :) As a stress test demonstration okay but I somehow missed the benefit of a forged one which is huge - weight. A forged one is lighter thus you can gain extra power which would otherwise be lost due to higher weight of the casted piston. Again - as a short video quickly demonstrating the difference it is okay :)
