I'm not there yet and my GAS is in check since I've got a list I'm set on that is like my personal 5 year plan (more like 10 if realistic) I think you have a good way to deal with it. Since you've already got it you have some experience with it and can better decide what you *really* miss about it. GAS is just addiction, getting lulled in by marketing speak and synthfluenza. what I've learned during my 2 months away from home as an internally displaced person was that having an ipad, an audio interface, headphones and an expressive controller like Linnstrument or seaboard (I took both) is more than enough for me creatively. Of course I've missed my electric cello and eurorack and bass station 2, but hardware is not what makes me me musically.

Dear JNJ, I’m really enjoying your videos and music. I have evolved my own way of dealing with G.A.S. which I often suffer from. My system (which does not always work) is to take a look at one of the beautiful pieces of music equipment that I already own and imagine that I just bought it. I think about all the possibilities and what I might discover. Added to that is the knowledge that I know the item works (not all new/used gear works on arrival) and also I already know something about the functions (as if I’d seen a lot of KZitem videos about it.) Then I throw in the thought that other less fortunate musicians might be hoping someday to have what is sitting right in front of me - and what would they do with it? It’s worth a try. Love your work! Keep going! - Rodney

The question is, does anybody else have the thing where you obsessively research every single option when you're trying to decide on new gear and get so overwhelmed that you almost wanna get nothing? Haha. It really shouldn't be this difficult to choose a sampler/sequencer... but I swear companies meet and decide that they're all going to uniformly leave out a bunch of vital features so everyone keeps buying their stuff.

Man I’m stuck in this loop, but weirdly with specific things, most synths I’ve sold and moved on for good reason and never missed them. (Minus a vermona perfourmer, boyo do I still regret selling that; putting in an order in asap.) But for me I keep selling then re buying sequencers, this would be the third time I’ve gotten a beat step pro since I miss the immediacy of it (I guess I’ll keep it this time) but only since I sold a polyend seq and miss that but you can’t get them anymore. That was super fun for odd timings because of its longer button matrix. I still do most things in daws though, mostly only noodle with sequencers, and what I’m finding it ebbs and flows with phases so I’ll *try* to keep it this time (famous last words, I get pretty flighty with gear if I haven’t used it in a couple months)

I have avoided "GRAS" so far and remain committed to a beatstep pro and keystep pro for MIDI to CV and super easy sequencing/ARPs. (Sold Metropolix and do not see myself re-buying it...) I'm really happy with the Akai Force as the brain of my system, it is hands down the most flexible, most feature rich sequencer. It has 8 stereo audio tracks so beats the octotrack, I can use a step sequencer or record midi directly. I use it as a mixer and for my master chain running 7 hardware synths into it and 2 send return effects. I can emulate the octotrack effects using the crossfader, I can have a piano roll workflow like the deluge. I can send 4 cv outs to eurorack or semi-modular gear. Hope that doesn't give you too much GAS!

Hermod is a difficult one, I dislike the small screen too, but it punches WAY above its cost and relatively small HP footprint (it was a reacquisition for me too). Maybe look at the Oxi One as an alternative out of rack sequencer. I just got One recently instead of a Harpax (got fed up waiting in the queue for that), and I'm very impressed so far. I really enjoyed the Deluge for a while and created some nice tracks with that, but I personally think it's THE most unintuitive device I've ever used!

I don’t think that it’s true that your “just not a hardware sampler guy”, but the problem is that synth and sampler manufacturers purposely limit their gear in order to keep people buying their other products. There should be one sampler or even groovebox that has the features most of us ask for all the time in forums and whatnot Elektron is the obvious option here. If they made even a machine that couples the quality, features, and effects of the dt with the Octa mk2, it would be the obvious choice. Especially if they added the effects of a mutable warps or virus ti2. But that probably won’t happen. I don’t know why

That was such a fun video! I, of course, know nothing of this problem of which you speak…. cause I haven’t actually sold any gear yet… and I don’t understand the complex folks have about buying too much gear… cause I’m poor.. I know if I came into a lot of money, no matter how much money, I would remain poor because.. gear.. Gear, as near as I can tell, is why God made money after all.. I mean wtf else do you spend money on? Spending money on other things, besides gear, that I can understand feeling the guilt for. Why just about 6 months ago I bought a whole lot of socks… and I still feel guilty about that.. cause you can’t play socks! To be fair, I’m thinking of spending around $1400 on an ambisonics recording set up soon… and maybe then I can find something to do with the socks… Yeah.. but guilt about buying too much gear… that’s just for the weak!

@@JamesonNathanJones I’m thinking about the mpc x, the force and their advantages over my current equipment for quite some time now. Maybe after 20 years of using akai samplers I’m sort of biased, or even old school when I say that I actually prefer the display of my machine over the high resolution touch displays because… was the daw less endeavor not actually meant to get my eyes off monitor screens for some time in order to let creativity flow better? What I like is the, meanwhile way more simplified and faster way to edit samples on the devices or on pc and the ability to play them while slicing them up. Although I don’t mind to dial in numbers… So this could potentially make me deinstall recycle which I’d highly appreciate. Also the newer ones have cv which is awesome, but do you really need it if you have a keystep pro or something similar. Funny is that my akai devices increased in value or where holding their value over time really well. Anyway. My thoughts about the force would be too much for a comment section :) - back to my current 5000. It’s a midi sequencer and sampler with a 3 oscillator virtual analog, 8channel hd recording if you want, 4 chain-able effect busses with 2 efx each and so on, can edit in song mode, matrix, piano roll… Lfo per pad, layering, cycling, randomness, patched phrases,… it’s a nice thing if it matches the way you are thinking. Song>sequence>track>program and the entire enchilada. I know you’re having kind of a hard time finding the right sampler for you so I don’t wanna influence your choices. I just think akai samplers are the holy grail in hip hop and totally underrated in the electronic music but that they are really worth a look.
