Same Ive been watching since that dirt floor tin can shed haha. Hes came such a long way and what an inspiration. He is the sole reason I took up knife making and now run my own business forging knives all day. There's a lot of amazing blacksmiths out there but Alec has that rare gift that sets him so far apart from the pack.

Watching this got me thinking… I’d love to see a comparison of making this with the power hammer vs with a human powered hammer. How much longer would it take? Can you still be as precise and make something as perfect?

The end result would be the same, but the method and starting billet would be different. You for sure would not want to start with such a large billet. Start with a flat bar about the size he uses for a knife, upset one end to fatten it up, hot cut on one side of the upset so you can isolate the claw then flatten out the cut with the claw pointing off to the side and the head starts to protrude on the other. Then you start hammering out the handle and you are at the same stage he left the video on but with less steel to work going forward.

This might not be exactly what youre looking for, but he has a series of videos where he makes a knife without using any power tools and the way he has to change his technique is really interesting to watch.

I dont think its humanly possible to make complicated damascus like this without a powerhammer or like three apprentices hitting the metal for you, it takes way too long and the metal powder would oxidize before you finish consolidating the steel properly

@@Davey768 theres a very big difference between forge welding two pieces of steel like a san mai and forging out of powdered steel The more surface area you have to work together into a single whole the faster you have to work before oxidation ruins your weld and powdered steel is nothing but surface area

A lot of us have been following Will's journey since he left your shop. Fantastic to watch him gearing up for his Journeyman's test. It's something he SHOULD be able to do easily... we certainly know the quality of his work. My only concern is that he DID kinda rush those knives. I hope he didn't compromise anywhere. It will be really good to see you two doing some stuff together again.

I had one of the Estwing hammers years ago, and gave it away. Wood handles only, and yes, it makes a huge difference on impact loads to your hand, wrist, and forearm if you use it a lot. Same with your forging hammers...

In lieu of the oxidized stainless foil, you can just coat the inside with normal white out liquid. The zinc will keep the forged metals from sticking to the canister.
