Tell me about your anvil! The gussets on each side of the hardy hole after the step down suggest a couple of barrel swageing blocks on a hardy mount, but that's just a guess. Is that an antique gun smith's anvil? Or, some other specialty profession? I've never seen one like it. Nice forge work, I've been interested in cable Damascus ever since the article in Ken Warner's Knives publication (80s-90s). I'll keep watchin'...

It is a newer anvil but modeled after a farriers anvil. The 2 prongs off the back are for bending the horse shoes, and the ones on either side of the horn to my understanding would have been used to make the nibs on the shoe. I could be wrong so take it with a gain of salt lol. Cable Damascus was and is the first Damascus I have been able to make and I love the patterns.

Depends what you have access to. If you only have access to leafsprings those will work, just make sure you look up heat treating Information for the type of steel and type of sword you plan on making. If you have access to better materials, 80crv2 is considered the top of the mark for making knives and swords. But 1075-1095 are also good.

@@geraldlrstubbs you are talking about true Damascus. Yes "Damascus steel these days is just forge welding two pieces of steel together. But the simple term for it is Damascus even though it has a different scientific name.

For making twisting easier I welded some roundstock to a pair of vice grips a piece off the jaws, and a piece off the adjustment bolt on the end. Works like a champ

You can get old school pipe wrenches really cheap at auctions and antique stores.. just weld the bar onto those..

I try to forge the ends square then use an Old pipe wrench with an extra bar welded on for twisting. It does make it easier, and like northbrook1978 said, they are easy and cheap to find, got mine from a second hand store for $3 lol
