I have watched hundreds of videos, from some of the most well regarded smiths, but this vid managed to teach some things that they all leave out. Well done!

Thank you! So many forging videos show you the work without ever explaining exactly what they are doing or the very basics of each step involved. It's one thing to demonstrate how to forge for entertainment, it's another to actually teach the skill. Thanks for being a teacher.

Looks so easy. And very good teaching. The best videos on forging a blade I've seen. How thick is the material you would recommend a beginner? And is there a steel thats the easiest to forge. I do have a electric kiln for the heat treatment. Best wishes from Denmark
@StuartSmithHandForgedKNives
3 жыл бұрын
4 - 5mm is best starting thickness. good starter steel is 1070 if you can get it or you can salvage some leaf springs which are usually 5160.

As always it is a pleasure watching you forging. I am Soooooooooooooo glad to see you are back on the video deal. I finished my newest Bowie you are invited to give your criticism as always. I have a question though on my most recent build along with the last Bowie you shared your eye on you mentioned not to make the handle smaller than the recosso. The question is how do you determine the size of the handle? For example if the recosso is say an inch and a quarter. Would the handle closest the guard be to vertically wide and uncomfortable in the hand. Either way I'd love a comment and your honesty on the build.. I look forward to hearing from you . I can not wait for the next video in your series and many many more from my favorite maker.. Oh and fantastic job for the person filming for you as well my friend... Cheers and God bless you and yours from me and mine.... Martin

It's all a matter of proportions. You have to develope an eye for aesthetic balance and it takes practice. For now look at other knives and use them as refernece.

I really enjoy your vids. I have a question. How do you know how big your stock needs to be for a given knife size?
@StuartSmithHandForgedKNives
5 жыл бұрын
It helps to know before hand what you're going to make. Froms that idea or sketch or whatever allow for approximately 20% increase in size due to material manipulation . Thickness is dealer's choice but thicker steel can be forged out wider too.

Doesn’t state or doesn’t know how to hammer bevels, you should angle your piece and hammer to match the bevels you made, if you do it you won’t have to reprofile your blade
