Seriously John, every upload you make I wonder why you only have so few subscribers. I guess today people don't appreciate content from which they can learn. In contrast to the spark and awe channels (which I'll happily call the discovery channel effect), you stay true to your craft and seem intent to teach. I LOVE it and I hope you keep up the good work. Not to put you in a spotlight, but you've just become my first supported channel. Just simply because you deserve it. I know it's not much, but I just hope to see you grow and keep those video's coming. I've learned so much from your content alone and the way you present it reminds me of those few teachers I had in live that actually could engage me and I try to apply that same enthusiasm to my own blacksmithing demos.

Hi As I am a beginner I (not corectly acerate angle) made one sided ping hammer. Made mine from a 2 lb ping ball ping I flattened the ball and I did not get 90 degrees off set but more like 40 * .But I loving It as I can stand in my spot and hit to lenghten or flip to my rounding head side. Thanks again

The die of a rounding hammer has a function just like a cross peen or a regular flat face you should not have a "favorite" hammer nor should you have "hated" hammer at least not based on face shape and limiting your self to one hammer is ridiculous unless you work specifically on one thing only. Also refusing to use something useful simply because its popular and " EVERYBODY" is using it is childish.

Hi John, when you say "modified", did you just grind down your original hammer? or did you actually have to heat and forge the head to it's new shape?
@sladoeii
5 жыл бұрын
I believe it was just reshaping the existing one since the sledge already had an octagonal cross section, it is easy to set it on the 45s.

I flattened the ends by forging
@markschweter6371
5 жыл бұрын
As John has said , forged. Another way to think is to imagine how much weight you'd loose as well as how long to grind that much off. That's the advantage of forging, you can get close to net shape while minimising material loss.
@bunyanforgings7849

@@markschweter6371 You're absolutely right. Just exploring an option that hopefully doesn't involve blowing out my shoulder. Wish I would have gotten into smithing 20 years ago.

You can grind a hammer down to make a diagonal pein, you will of course loose more mass by grinding than forging but if you ended up with a 3 pound hammer from a 4 pound hammer are you going to be worried? That’s the question, But lighter hammer may help with a buggered shoulder.

perhaps missing something obvious here. If its a double peen hammer with the diagonal peens on both ends, why does one end work for drawing out and the other for spreading? Wouldnt they both spread?
@BlackBearForge
Жыл бұрын
In use the peens address the work at 90 degrees to each other. That means on is inline with the work for spreading and the other is perpendicular to the work for drawing out.

whats the point of a hammer with two faces that are the same...why not leave one a flat face so that then you can easily switch over to smoothing out the marks left from the peen...

I know it sounds kind of weird, but if you hold it one way the peen is straight in line with the work, spreading the material sideways flip the hammer over while still holding it, and now the peen is crossways which will draw the material out lengthwise
@danielcrawford7315
5 жыл бұрын
@@shadetreeforge well stated, easy to grasp that idea. Blessed days sirSir, Crawford out

For a general forging hammer that would be the ideal. But this is a special purpose hammer. While the faces are the same profile they are opposites in use. One side is like a cross peen for drawing out and the other is like a straight peen for spreading. I only use these when there is significant material to move.
