Today is the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in today’s Gospel, the Lord teaches us a lesson on mercy and forgiveness.
How often must we forgive? Jesus says, “seventy-seven times;” or as another version puts it “seventy times seven.” The meaning, brothers and sisters, is contained in the parable that Jesus narrates.
What did the servant do after the king has forgiven his loan? Oh, on his way home, he found a fellow servant and forced him to pay the amount owed to him. He did not listen to his pleading. The king learned of the incident and handed this “wicked servant” over to the torturers until he should pay back his debt.
Friends, we are called to extend to fellow sinners the mercy and forgiveness we receive from God. The one who has been forgiven by God must not acquire God’s compassionate heart.
