There is a special kind of nostalgia for everyday things and for those things which pay tribute to the meaningful design of everyday things. Such is the Benchmade 486 Saibu. This Seiichi Nakamura designed EDC knife, with its strongly Loveless inspired utility drop point blade and unique skeletonized grip, goes beyond simple abstract design, and instead has some kind of uncanny nostalgia for the charm of a designed place like a Japanese lattice wall. There's even something to the bamboo-esque back spacer which separates the proverbial two walls of the grip. The combination of the sculpted g10, the concave pivot and screws, and the delightful little inserts all make this more than the some of its parts.
This is an interesting alternative to the griptilian or the bugout models and has an artistic flare of some of the designer knives out there.
Now this is not an art knife nor is it trying to be one. But this discontinued, forgotten knife is somehow memorable, in spite of it's ordinary material execution, even with high quality material like cocobolo, 20cv steel, and Benchmade Made in USA build quality. That is what good design does after all.
So I love carrying this little every day carry knife.
