Mi humble contribution: 1) Whiplash, a PC arcade racing game by Interplay, published by the second half of the 90's, I think. Super fun. 2) Extreme G 3 for PS2/GC, published by the now defunct Acclaim. The N64 games were good, but the third game for PS2 and Gamecube was absolutely awesome. Sony should buy the rights and make a sequel/remake. 3) N-Gen Racing for PS1, don't remember the publisher. You race with some kind of military looking planes, similar to Wipeout. Great graphics. 4) Toca 3 for PS2. Gran Turismo 3 and 4 eclipsed this game when it came out, but it's a masterpiece, choke full of content. 5) Sledstorm for PS1. The physics were nice, the tracks fun to play and the licensed soundtrack was tremendous. A reboot was released for PS2, but the physics weren't the same and the game felt generic. And that's it. I'm really glad you mentioned Rollcage. One of my all time favorites.

Rollcage and Rollcage Stage 2 are both available on PC, and look much better too. The only thing is the US PC version of Rollcage Stage 2 got renamed for some reasons (Death Track Racing), while the European version kept the original name. I happen to own the original European version, strangely i found it brand spanking new in a Savers/Value Village years ago.

I'm a bit late to the party, but - DETHKARZ! A late 90s PC-exclusive futuristic combat racer. It's got a great set of powerups, cool cars and tracks, and my favourite explosion effects in games, ever (I'm talking about car explosions). It's also dirt cheap, you can still get a sealed copy for like 30 bucks on ebay.

The car in Motorhead at 03:23 looks like it's loosely based on the McLaren F1 from Scud Race by Sega, right down to the orange and blue livery. I'd never heard of this game before, but it's got a nice silky smooth frame rate for an old PC title.

RALLY CROSS for the Playstation 1 is one of my all time favorites! Solid frame rate, tight controls, and AMAZING suspension physics with squeaky shock sound effects! Some UNIQUE FACTS about this game: 1) This game supported the Dual Shock 1 controller about 10 months BEFORE the controller was RELEASED! I remember seeing a "feedback" setting in the control options of this game that was not accessible and thinking "what the hell is that all about?" Once the dual shock controller was plugged in, a picture of it was shown on screen, and the feedback option "lit up" which simply allowed you to "enable" or "disable" the vibration. 2) This game had the BIGGEST jump I'd ever seen in a racing game at that time. In the Island Track about mid way thru, there was a HUGE jump with about a full second of hang time and a tricky, somewhat technical landing needed. 3) This game MADE you flip your vehicle back onto its wheels after you rolled it over onto its roof. You would have to use the L1 and R1 buttons with timing to "rock" your vehicle back and forth onto its wheels! Really a sweet and cool gameplay element that I'll never forget. 4) This game was the first to have a HEAD ON and SUICIDE mode which made you race in the OPPOSITE direction of either one or all three opponents! A tough and very challenging way to race to first place. You could even race 2-player split screen against a friend in the HEAD ON mode. If you could smash into your opponent as you passed by them, causing them to flip over without coming off your wheels, you were GOLD. Awesome!

When you mentioned that the player can go off the beaten track in Motorhead it immediately brought to mind the PC game Monster Truck Madness, most of the time I stopped racing to go in search for the football pitch. My favourite racing game would have to be Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast, yet it never seems to get a mention. And it might be worth highlighting the 16 bit Micro Machines, not necessarily forgotten but definitely classic racers.

Wow great that you mentioned Rock n Roll racing! I actually just asked EmuReview if he liked that on his forum yesterday (he is a big RC Pro Am fan). This game is fantastic. You can even see how there is some Warcraft 2 on those levels, as well as their love for rock (they did have Ozzy come play at Blizzcon once). Wow I really dig those Gran Turismo gloves, lucky you! GT3 is the reason I bought a PS2 (along with wanting to play DDR also as that was my new arcade addiction).

I'm glad Rollcage Stage II made the list. I was going to mention it if you hadn't. When I bought it, I couldn't play it for years due to errors I'd get every time I tried to install it or play it. And I'm quite certain my desktop Pc was just never good enough. I've owned the PC version for so long, but the first time I got to play it was around 2 to 4 years ago. Total Drivin /grand tour racing 98 for PS1 really is a forgotten classic. It's a mix between rally and racing, but the unique part for it's time was the tracks. Varied, and the ability to drive outside of the intended track made this game stand out, even when Rage Racer and Gran Turismo was available. The most impressive part was the fov (field of view), the ability to see landscape far away was something very special in this game, when most games had the problem with "pop up" graphic.
