Awesome video, most of the videos on internet explains formal charge based on its equation.. none of them ever explained why formal charge is important..

Thanks sir for this video because in my school exams these type of questions are mostly asked. I never know what is formal charge and how it should be calculated , I always make mistakes in between calculating FC. But after watching this I am glad that I can do any problems based on this topic.

I'd recommend OpenStax at Rice University (openstax.org/details/books/chemistry-atoms-first) supplemented with KZitem videos. MIT Courseware has some good courses (I like this one: ocw.mit.edu/courses/chemistry/5-111-principles-of-chemical-science-fall-2008/). All should be available at no cost. My website (www.thegeoexchange.org/chemistry) also has some useful content. The other thing is to find someone else interested in learning chemistry as well and work through problems together. I don't know much about apps. One thing to keep in mind is that technology is helpful but having a clear learning goal and finding other people with similar goals is equally important. Chemistry is most interesting when you learn to understand something like neurotransmitters, clean energy, etc.

Sir are 2 oxygen atoms bonded to nitrogen by dative bond in NO3-?is that why all 5 electrons of nitrogen are used up? Also thank you for Making chemical bonding so much easier for me 😄

for the last problem, why can't you have ONE double bond and 2 single bonds with the oxygen? That way, all atoms have eight electrons in their valence shells. Xenon will just have a lone pair on it.

I checked, but in both cases, there were all 26 electrons used. The only difference I saw was that Xe didn't have an expanded octet. So, would this still be a valid structure as all valence electrons are used?

With two single bonds, and one double bond you'd need to have a lone pair on the Xe to use the 26. This would be a valid Lewis structure. However, if you look at the formal charges the Oxygen atoms with single bonds each are -1. The Oxygen with a double bond has a formal charge of zero. The Xe has a formal charge of +2. So while it is a valid structure, the Lewis structure with each element having a formal charge of zero is more likely and considered a more favorable structure.
