Wear a Face Respirator. I did not at first: The wind blew into my face, I got a breath of this Formic Acid--WHEW--Took my breath, lungs burned, head-dizzy. I then got my respiratory and used it! No problems afterwards. I also used STEP two, and I used my "food tongs" to handle the material, I also wore heavy latex type gloves. My hive went from a small "HUMMMM" to a MAZOR BUZZZZZ, can't blame the bees this stuff is strong. I got a small beard and after about four hours of "buzzing" the bees went home. I was scared they would Swarm, they did not. Now a couple days later: When I walk in front of the Hive, I Hold My Breath. This stuff is powerful! Well-to my nose/lungs/respiratory system. Take a sniff, you'll wish you didn't.

Yes it's better to use a mask with this kind of product. It's even written on label. Thank you very to share your experience with us. Have a very good beekeeping season!

Excellent presentation. In my strong opinion, this IS a scientific experiment. Well done! (As for untreated controls, we can all be confident that untreated/matched colonies did not have their VM populations magically disappear). You’re a veterinarian, I’m a PhD Psychologist and your presentation is scientific enough for me!

Did you retreat hive E? If so, which method, and what we’re your results? Regarding hives C and D (I think), did you leave those alone (with 80% reduction) or did you retreat? I think I might have gone a single strip for 10 days on those two hives. (Yes, not very scientific on that one).

Yes we retreated. If I remember well we did few "flash" treatement with formic acid 65% In septembre. And oxalic acid with Varrox vaporizer in november. But at theses super high levels colonies will eventually die... It sometimes happens that one specific colony in an apiary has super high varroa levels. And it's hard to reduce it. We wish you a very nice beekeeping season!

My understanding is that 2 strips are for the treatment of a maximum of 2 brood boxes. It looks like some of your hives had several supers. The increased volume would result in a lesser concentration of formic acid vapor and result in reduced efficacy. Lovely apiary, best wishes!

Yes it's logical to see it like this. But, on the label, we can use it for one brood box, 2 brood boxes or 2 brood boxes + super, etc... There is no specific note about a maximum of supers on the hive. Thank you very much for your comment. Have a nice season!

Thank you, I just settled in on a plan to use formic pro and your testing is confirming my hopeful results. Well done and informative.

Thank you. And do not forget that Formic Pro is a brood treatment. If you do a test after treatment you need to wait for a more accurate result : «To get a more accurate mite count, wait a full brood cycle, or 16+ days after treatment.»

Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, it was a little bit long process to do this video. In general we have good results with this product. But always read the label before using it. Be careful when using at the end of season. You can have some mortality in the first days of treatment. Have a nice end of season!

How many days did you wait after treatment to conduct post treatment analysis?
@ArtisansDeLaRuche
3 жыл бұрын
We did post-treatment analysis around one week after. Officially they recommand *to wait a full brood cycle or 16 days and more after treatment* to have a more accurate mite count. We did our post treatment analysis one week after because of our time schedule. It was impossible to do at another moment. We need to remember that Formic Pro is sold as a brood treatment. That's why they suggest to test after a brood cycle. Results come a little bit later if we compare with other treatments. Maybe results would have been differents if we waited a little bit more. Very good question! Thank you very much!

Great presentation! Did you check the queens 1 month after treatment? Any queen or significant brood loss? Thank you!
@ArtisansDeLaRuche

Hi Minta, First thank you very much for your comment. On our side, we never lost any queens with this treatment. In this little test we re-checked our queen in our regular inspections. Everything was normal. But with some hives we have sometimes adult bees mortality the first day of treatment. We already had reports from clients of a lot of dead bees in front of beehives. With the previous product called Mite Away Quick Strips (MAQS) we had a queen loss + a lot of dead bees in one colony. In general, we think that we always need to be cautious when we use this product. It's important to read carefully the label and repect it. -> Hive must be strong enough -> Good temperatures -> No entrance reducer etc... In general we prefer to use the option 2 treatment :1 strip per 10 days. We hope that it helps you a little. Have a very nice end of beekeeping season!

Yes it could happen. But in general it happens when it's too hot outside. When always need to be aware of hot summer days when using this.

When do you start the treatment? Late summer?
@ArtisansDeLaRuche

Here we follow official guidelines of Quebec Government (MAPAQ). It could depend on where your apiaries are located. -> First we do our phoretic mites monitoring 3 times per year. We do sticky board test. #1 beginning of MAY #2 end of JULY (beginning of August) #3 beginning of SEPTEMBER (late summer) If we reach local thresholds in mites we do our treatments. But IN GENERAL we almost always do a small treatment (1 stripe 10 days) in beginning of MAY, and we ALWAYS do a regular treatment (2 stripes 14 days) in SEPTEMBER. In July in depends on results on our phoretic mites tests. Remember that the Honey bee colony cluster must cover a minimum of 6 brood frames (approximately 10,000 bees). **It's very important especially if you do a treatment in May... Hope it could answer your question. Have a nice season!

Artisans De La Ruche thank you much, so is it safe to do the treatment during nectar flow? Honey super on?
@ArtisansDeLaRuche
4 жыл бұрын
@@harrygthang7389 Yes, the company tells that it's ok to do with honey supers on beehives (for FORMIC PRO only of course). In fact we can read this on label : « Formic acid is an organic acid that naturally occurs in honey. Formic Pro controls the vapour release of formic acid throughout the treatment period. By the end of treatment, formic acid levels in the hive reflect what naturally occurs in honey, when applied as per label » Anyway, on our side we try to avoid treatment during honey flow. That's why that a «soft» treatment is done in May, and regular treatment in late summer.
