Other cities like police officers to take their vehicles home as a cheap way of community policing. Perhaps there is less crime if a police car is parked across the street or in one's neighborhood. The problem with Fort Worth is apparently more than half of the officers that take their cars home don't live within the city. There may be valid reasons to allow an officer that is just outside the city limits to take the car home. So, perhaps they would be on duty while commuting on various Fort Worth arterials. However, there would be less of a justification for officers 20 or 30 miles out of the city. Personally I believe that police officers, as well as other city employees should be required to live in the city where they're working. It gives them much closer ties to the community, rather than outsiders with no local ties.

Our city of less than 2000 people do not have 1 offer that lives within the city limits, and some live over 30miles away. It is absolutely a cost to the taxpayers, maintenance, fuel liability, and It shortens the life city vehicles. That said I find it funny that our police chief saids take home vehicle are good for the community and he based it on the fact that other city have take home vehicle. Tax payers are getting the shaft.

I love having the cops who live in our neighborhoods. We have a cop that lives close to Central High School who drives his cop car (unit 1020) very dangerously. Being in that big black car makes him easy to identify as a very dangerous driver. He has his own video here on KZitem driving like a jacka$$.

Jesus guys, in city limits I can get behind so you can have that community trust and be seen; even if it can be used as a target, but whoever is living two hours outside city limits, you need to apply to be a state trooper or run for sheriff where you live cuz, my guy, dayum. 😂 Gas was expensive for everybody, but y’all outside the city, yall gotta move it in man. I’d vote to allow a certain mileage outside of town, but come on.

How about leaving the vehicle running when they go into the convenience store and spend an hour drinking coffee and talking with the staff!

cop here. I understand the frustration from the public seeing this, and so I would often demonstrate how long it takes to boot up computers, radios, etc, all of which have to be turned off if the vehicle is not running because they rapidly drain the battery.

No, I appreciate your input and I get that the system operates while the vehicle is running & I do understand that it will take forever to come back online if you shut it down, but my frustration is that I personally have seen officers taking advantage and hanging out inside of Quick trips drinking coffee and having whole conversations with employees and cop facing customers down while the cruiser is outside running. Now grant it, if it was just a normal restroom break and grab a cup of coffee, maybe a donut or two, then head back to the cruiser, I would definitely understand that but that is not what I see unfortunately.
