As an Unreal dev. To clarify some things. This is ALL lumen. Not "RT vs Lumen". Lumen IS RT. Software is, despite the name, NOT rendered on your CPU. Its still on the GPU. But is not using RT cores that an RTX card would have. Hardware uses the RT cores to accelerate RT rendering. Making it technically faster. The visual difference is only from small features being fully enabled at max quality on Hardware that would run in a limited mode on Software for performance reasons.

Hope you enjoy this look at UE5s Lumen, it is quite impressive how close the software solution gets in most situations, software and hardware run quite well with TSR. Portal RTX will come eventually btw, but its a difficult comparison since all the assets in the game were redone for the RTX version.

When comparing Portal, compare the original and RTX, not RTX with and without enhanced assets cuz the RTX version is based off the DX7 version of Portal. Hello @RayTracingRevolution ! Could you please explain to me the difference between software and hardware-based global illumination? I’m a big fan of ray-traced GI and I play all games with it if supported but it’s difficult for me to catch the difference between software and hardware-based lumen GI in Fortnite. I only clearly can see the performance difference (around 10-20% with my 4080). I do not care about reflections too much in this game, I’m interested in global illumination and trying to figure out do I losing something when playing with software lumen GI Thank you in advance!
@dwatts64

@@fvmicxmI don't know the full extent of the differences with Lumen's implementation, but so far as I understand the Software GI is a software-based implementation that is doing a lot of calculation on the CPU, but is casting fewer rays with fewer bounces, hence the reduced accuracy and lesser color information. The advantage to the Software GI implementation, is that it is somewhat hardware agnostic. You don't need a RTX capable card to use it, though that would improve performance. So if you're on a Radeon card for instance, you would still be able to use the Software GI without slashing 80% of your frame rate off. Hardware GI uses the RTX chipset and as a result you get more rays, more bounces, and better quality overall but it runs horribly on a system without RTX hardware.

For a lot of people it simply aint worth spending twice or even thrice as much for minimal RT improvements, especially with how it's being implemented and even the 4090 needing upscallers in most titles with ultra RT so it's playable, it does look amazing but lumen with how early in development it is shows that brute forcing the new technology isn't the path to follow when it gets really close results with gigantically less performance loss

Software Ray tracing global illumination is impressive, and the same with reflections and honestly aside from a lack of player reflections the software Ray tracing looks almost indistinguishable from hardware Ray tracing…. We play with the Rtx 4070 laptop, and I get about 85 to 95 fps with epic settings on almost everything while using the high setting for global illumination, and reflections with hardware Ray tracing enabled running 2560x1600 resolution dlss performance and I’m curious if the software Ray tracing would give me an even higher average frame rate above 85 to 95 so I’ll probably test it out !

Software uses Signed Distance Fields + Screen Space, while Hardware also traces rays against polygon geometry. Lumens Software solution takes off-screen information into account (with Signed Distance Fields) so it's much more capable than Screen Space Reshade GI, for example. There are some downsides to it: This implementation doesn't work with Skeletal Meshes (deformable models, like characters for example, you can see the lack of player reflection with software only) It also has trouble with thin geometry. KZitem hates links, so if you want more detail, google "Lumen Technical Details" and go the the UE5 site :)
