This song, in many ways, was so Marlon. The piece was "Fortune Favours the Brave" - which was so him. The production was "Mosaic V: a Taste of Opera & Broadway" in 2007 - the precursor to our show next month, "Mosaic VI". Marlon wasn't just a soloist for this piece, but was heavily involved in the choreography and staging for the entire show and for many of our productions during this time - including the Cacique Award-winning "Tributes" the following year. These ultimately led us on the path to undertaking "Carmen" and "Les Misérables", where he shared the roles of Don José and Jean Valjean. That was the kind of contribution Marlon made with us and organisations he worked with, and for which we will be forever grateful. His choralography lives on every time we perform music from those shows, especially the folk and calypso like "Rhythm of a People" and "Sayamanda". And his tremendous voice and stage presence live on in all the recordings of these landmark performances, including his stirring performances of "Steal Away" and "The Holy City", featured on two of our albums. Through the shock and sadness of his passing, all we can do is celebrate the memories, honour his remarkable work, and be so grateful for the music we made together. 😔 Rest well, Marlon (1979-2024).
