Elisa Ayala y Josué Castro (Mexico)
The historical city of Salamanca is home to a fascinating blend of indigenous and colonial architecture, music, and art. It is also home to the creative team of Elisa Ayala and Josué Castro, the husband and wife artists behind this vibrant Rueda de la Fortuna, or Wheel of Fortune. This brightly-colored masterpiece delightfully marries the art of cartonería (paper maché) with enchanting examples of regional dance and dress. Josué applies techniques learned as a mechanical engineer to construct mechanisms and gears allowing the sculpture to spin and providing each of the eight baskets with a gentle sway.
Each turn of the wheel tells a different story. Featured are a lovely Oaxacan Flor de Piña dancer, El Tigre de Zitala from Guerrero, a Chiapas maiden wearing the garments of the Las Chiapanecas, a Viejito from Michoacán, a woman wearing traditional Huasteca garb, a Sonoran or Sinaloan bailador ready for the Danza del Venado, a young Jalisco girl awhirl in the Jarabe Tapatío (Mexican hat dance), and a Volador de Papantla from Veracruz.
The artists rely heavily on recycled materials such as cardboard and other paper, as well as a type of natural paste or engrudo. The figures, which require precise attention to detail, are decorated by hand with bright acrylic paint.
The young artists have risen quickly to prominence. Josué’s rare skill has earned him an international reputation as well as dozens of prestigious recognitions, including first prize in the Mexican Folk Toy National Competition. The Wheel of Fortune secured Elisa’s second place honor in the national 2019 Gran Premio de Arte Popular sponsored by Banamex.
