Prevention is an underutilized resource in healthcare. Within behavioral health, the ability to bounce back through stressful and traumatic situations (resilience) is a key preventative skill that helps people overcome the mental challenges life provides. Resilience needs to be learned, so the more we talk about it, the more we understand, and the more people who can benefit. This talk explores how to build resilience in our own lives. Thad Shunkwiler is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Science at Minnesota State University, Mankato. In addition to his academic work, he is a licensed behavioral health provider and has over 10 years of experience in helping people with mental health and substance use disorders. Professor Shunkwiler’s research includes understanding how building resilience prevents addiction and suicide. He has presented at numerous conferences and his work has been featured in both television and print media. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
